Cincinnati Reds
The Reds are playing about as bad as a team could be playing right now. They have been dreadful during this season and it does not look like it is going to get all that much better.
Going into this season, it was understood that this team would not be anything all that special but I do not think anyone had them being this dreadful. Even teams that are expected to be dreadful can start off better than this.
At the moment, Cincinnati holds a record of 11-28 and they are clearly last in the NL Central. You know you are a bad team when the lowly Cubs and Pirates are ahead of you.
When you have a team that has performed so poorly, everyone is at fault and that is not hyperbole. You do not get in this type of situation by one person or one group not doing their job.
For starters, one glaring deficiency in their game has been their pitching. More times than not, they do not give their team a chance to win and it does not look like it is going to get much better.
Also, the offense has been ok at times but has not been anything great, and a lot of times it does not matter how they do on that side of the field because the pitching already put them in a big hole.
Actually, it is very surprising to me that the Reds have only allowed 5 runs in the first 2 games with the Jays. I think it is more so the Toronto hitters getting in their own way than their pitching being all that great.
Hunter Greene delivered a strong outing on Saturday but it did not end up mattering because the offense went cold. Now, Graham Ashcraft will be making his debut on Sunday in the finale with Toronto. Facing that lineup is no treat if your veteran in this league and that is even more so the case if you are making your first start ever.
Toronto Blue Jays
Boy, the Blue Jays have really not been anything all that great so far. Despite all the pundits that were so giddy on them, they have certainly come nowhere near what people thought.
It is not to say that they have not been good at times but it clearly has not been done on a regular enough basis. I feel the most honest assessment of them at this point is they are an average baseball team with an awful lot of work to still do.
If they were 22-18 through the first 40 games in past years, I do not feel people would have all that many issues but this season is different. 2022 is the season where they are no longer the nice story and are actually expected to perform at a high level and win the division.
Forget the Yankees, they are not on the same level as the Rays right now. If they do climb back to the top of the East it is going to require a lot of things going their way.
As we all know, there is a lot of baseball to be played and they can certainly figure things out and play how they should. However, this could also just be what they are and they never play all that great during this season.
To me, this series with Cincinnati came at an ideal time for them. When you are not playing very well, sometimes what you need is to take on a terrible team and figure things out. A series win or sweep certainly will not solve all their issues but it could get them back on track.
Toronto took the 1st game by a score of 2-1 and the 2nd game by a score of 3-1. As you can see, there was not a lot of offense but the pitching has looked sharp.
Alek Manoah kept up his strong pitching on Saturday, as he went 8 innings and allowed just 1 earned run. Next up in the rotation is Yusei Kikuchi who has looked solid for this club in his first season.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Reds are 17-36 in their last 53 games.
- The Reds are 15-39 in their last 54 interleague road games vs. a left-handed starter.
- The Blue Jays are 4-1 in their last 5 games.
- The Blue Jays are 20-6 in their last 26 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
Cincinnati Reds vs. Toronto Blue Jays MLB Prediction:
The Blue Jays have followed a similar script in the first two games of the series. They did not have much offense but the pitching was very strong.
I look for Kikuchi to be sharp here but also for some more offense. They really should be able to hit around this kid making his MLB debut no matter how good he is.
Even if they do not get to their starter, that Cincinnati bullpen is nothing special and can certainly be exposed by a good offense.
Give me Toronto laying the runs at home.
