The Reds will begin a series with the Blue Jays in Toronto on Friday, May 20th.
Luis Castillo and Hyun Jin Ryu are the probable pitchers for this one.
Toronto is a big favorite in this game and the total is currently sitting at 8.5.
Cincinnati Reds
Man, it certainly has not been a good year for the Reds at all. In fact, it has been one to forget.
I did not think they would be some great team but I did feel they would be better than this. Then again, it would not take all that much to be better than what they have done so far.
Based on what their record was just a few weeks ago, it is surprising to think they even have 11 wins. That number seems a little high based on their performance for 2022.
Coming into this series, Cincinnati has a record of 11-26 and they are of course last in the NL Central. No matter how bad the division is, it is pretty hard to expect anything better than last with that mark.
The Brewers currently lead this club by 12.5 games. It is hard to imagine that margin would ever decrease throughout the year and it will likely only get higher.
The Reds beat the Guardians on Thursday by a score of 4-2 and they were able to complete the sweep in the mini-series. Given how bad this team has been this season, it really does not even seem possible that they are sweeping teams.
Tyler Mahle went 6.1 innings and allowed 1 earned in the victory on Thursday. He was able to put forth a very strong start and the bullpen did their job which has not always been the case this season.
Luis Castillo will get the ball in this one and he sure will have his hands full. He comes into this contest with an 0-1 record with an ERA of 5.59.
Toronto Blue Jays
Given how talented of a team they are, there is no way that the Blue Jays can be happy with what they have done so far. They know they could and should be playing a lot better at this point in the season.
Simply put, Toronto has just not lived up to the expectations given to them. Yes, they were very lofty but that is expected when you have the kind of team they do.
Of course, there is a chance that this team figures it out and starts playing up to their full potential but there is no guarantee. So far, they have been a club that has just played average baseball.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Some of the chatter about them was overdone and the descriptions of the kind of team they are were not totally accurate.
Yes, they are a very talented team but they do have their holes as well. I still have to see more before I can put them in the true contender category.
For as much as I like their offense, I still feel their pitching could use some work. Manoah and Gausman are two very talented starters, but can you really trust Berrios, Kikuchi, Ryu, etc. in a big spot?
Also, the bullpen should be a concern for them. Again, I like some of the arms they have there but they have also not been the most consistent. That part of their game will have to get better during the course of the season.
This series with the Reds is one that they have to play well in. When going up against a team of this nature, it is understood what you must do to them.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Reds are 4-0 in their last 4 during game 1 of a series.
- The Reds are 16-36 in their last 52 road games.
- The Blue Jays are 4-0 in their last 4 interleague home games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Blue Jays are 24-8 in their last 32 games following a loss.
Cincinnati Reds vs. Toronto Blue Jays MLB Prediction:
This game is a battle of two pitchers that are no longer the same guy. It is not realistic to expect vintage stuff from either one of them.
The offense for Toronto was very quiet in the finale with the Mariners but I can see that being different here. With the talent they have on that side of the field, it is hard to expect that trend to continue.
Even though they are not facing a great team here, I am not sold on Ryu being very effective. The Reds are more than capable of putting up runs against him.
I will play the over of 8.5 here.
