The Reds and Cardinals will be playing in the third game of their series on Saturday afternoon.
Nick Lodolo will be opposed by Miles Mikolas in this one.
It is nothing crazy, but the Cardinals are still laying a good-sized number at home in this spot.
Cincinnati Reds
Although they occasionally surprise me with some wins they get, the Reds have shown time and time again this season that they just are not a good baseball team. Really, they are the exact opposite of one.
This season has gone about as poorly as it could for these guys and we have not even reached the All-Star break yet. There is no reason to believe that it is going to get any better as the season goes on.
I do feel they should be better than the record they have, but that still is not saying a ton. No matter how you look at it, winning a lot of games the way they are currently built is just not very realistic.
There has not been one part of their game this season that I thought has been a true strength of theirs. It is clear that the pitching and offense need a lot of work before they want to be back in the mix again.
Cincinnati did shock some folks by winning two of three from the Yankees, but at this point, it was too little, too late. It would have been nice if those types of wins were a common occurrence for this group, but they clearly have not been.
Hitting the road to take on this Cardinals team is no easy task and they did not start off that series on Friday how they would have liked with a 7-3 loss. A sweep is very possible if they are not careful in these games.
In their last loss, Hunter Greene went 5 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. After he left, the bullpen allowed some more runs, and the offense for the Reds did not give any support after the 3rd inning.
Nick Lodolo gets the ball in this one and he has seen mixed results thus far. It is clear the kid has a lot of potential, but he still has a lot of refining to do before he gets to where he wants to get.
St. Louis Cardinals
All season long, the Cardinals are a team that I have been impressed by. As you watch them play, it is hard not to like how they have played.
There are some teams in the NL that are more talented and powerful than these guys, but I still consider them to be a tricky team to match up against and I could see them being dangerous in the playoffs.
To me, I just view St. Louis as a solid, overall team that is fundamentally sound and well-managed. Those sorts of things might not get talked about a ton in today’s game, but they are still very important to any team.
They have been able to get contributions from a lot of different guys this season, but the one who has stood out the most is Paul Goldschmidt, who has been on a tear for the whole season. It is clear that he is one of the best hitters in the NL and there is a very good chance he wins the MVP. It is without question that he has led this team the whole season and likely will continue to do so.
As far as the pitching goes, I have also liked what I have seen from them so far. Both the rotation and bullpen have been effective and I do not see that changing all that much.
Even with the strong play for the Cards, they do still trail the Brewers by 2 games in the NL Central. At this point in the season, every game is so important that winning every game in this series should be the only thing on their mind against the Reds.
Andre Pallante went 5 innings and allowed 3 earned runs in the win on Friday. He put forth a solid outing and then the bullpen did not allow a single run while they were out there.
The Red Birds will be turning to Miles Mikolas this season and I have liked what I have seen from him in 2022. He might not be a guy that gets talked about a ton, but he has been impressive this season and has been a big reason why they have been steady. The record of 6-7 is not one that jumps out, but he does hold an ERA of 2.62.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Reds are 17-41 in their last 58 games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Reds are 5-16 in their last 21 Saturday games.
- The Cardinals are 15-5 in their last 20 during game 2 of a series.
- The Cardinals are 35-17 in their last 52 vs. the NL Central.
Cincinnati Reds vs. St. Louis Cardinals MLB Prediction:
The Cardinals followed a pretty simple attack in the opener and I see them doing so again here.
Mikolas is the more consistent arm and he should be able to once again be effective when he faces off with this lineup.
Lodolo might not get smoked here, but I still do not love him in this spot and it is hard to have a ton of confidence in this bullpen.
I like the Cardinals laying the price at home.
