The Reds will be on the road to face off with the Pirates for the second game of their series on Saturday evening.
Justin Dunn vs, Tyler Beede is the expected starting pitcher’s matchup in this one.
Pittsburgh is a small favorite at home in this one with the total set at 8.5.
Cincinnati Reds
The Reds had opportunities to get the win over their divisional rival on Friday, but they were unable to do and ended up losing 5-4.
This is a game where they had a 3-0 lead and things were looking pretty good for them, but it was the Pirates who had the answers when all was said and done from PNC Park.
Starter Graham Ashcraft went 6.2 innings while allowing nine hits and three earned runs to go along with eight strikeouts. Although he did get hit pretty well at times, I thought he was effective out there and did a good job of limiting the damage.
Reliever Joel Kuhnel only lasted 0.1 innings and allowed two hits and two earned runs and allowed the Pirates to rally and ultimately win the ball game. That really is not that surprising given how the bullpen for this team has performed this season.
Cincinnati did scatter seven hits around, but it really did not lead to a lot. I never thought they were able to get into much rhythm against Bryse Wilson who pitched quite well against them.
Unfortunately for this ball club, these sorts of losses have been all too common for them in 2022. When a squad has as many losses as they do, losing winnable games tend to happen a lot.
They will look to get back on track when Justin Dunn takes the mound on Saturday evening and he has not been all that impressive thus far.
The right-hander will be making his third start since being back in the Majors and the numbers simply have not been good. Sure, he will not be going up against some great offense, but he is still going to have his hands full.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates were able to follow up their series-ending win over the Red Sox with a win on Friday over the Reds to start off this series.
For a while, it did not look as if they were going to pull it out so it was good to see them fight and figure it out in a close one.
Bryse Wilson started the game and went seven innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs while punching out four batters. Overall, I liked what I saw from him out there.
When he left the game, the bullpen combined to go two innings and did not allow any runs. The duo of Will Crowe and Duane Underwood was able to get the job done.
Pittsburgh was able to tie up the game on a wild pitch and then were able to get a sac fly and single before the Reds went up again to make it 4-3.
Michael Chavis was the hero on Friday as he picked up a single with the bases loaded that ultimately won the game for the Pirates.
Given the kind of season they have had so far, there has not been a lot to get excited about, but that moment was one of them. They will look to carry some of that over to this tilt on Saturday.
Tyler Beede will get the start in the second game of this series and there is a good chance he will not go very long. I would say he has been decent this season, but it has not been anything that stands off the page, and in his starts, it is rare to see him go more than 3 innings.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Reds are 1-6 in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
- The Reds are 0-4 in their last 4 road games.
- The Pirates are 5-1 in their last 6 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Pirates are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. the NL Central.
Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Prediction:
Neither one of these teams gives me a ton of confidence, but I trust the Pirates more in this spot.
They have had far from a productive season, but Pittsburgh has looked solid in their last couple and I feel they can keep it up here.
This play is not based so much on my love for Beede or this pitching staff but more on the lack of confidence in Dunn & co. He simply has not been all that effective this season and I look for that to keep up in this one.
I like the Buckos as the favorite at home in this spot.
