Cincinnati Reds
The Reds have played so poorly to start off the season that is hard to even think of an adjective to describe it. Terrible would not be doing it justice.
It is one thing for a team to go out there and struggle early on but what they have done is taken that to another level. Frankly, it is hard to be as bad as them right about now.
I did not feel they would be a contender this season but I did think it was reasonable they could be relevant. Based on the guys they have on their roster and what they have done in the past few seasons, that was certainly realistic.
With a record of 7-24, everyone on the team is to be blamed. They need to do a lot of looking themselves in the mirror because what they have put out there on a nightly basis is a disgrace to the city and to the sport of baseball.
There are certainly plenty of areas in their games that have holes but the main one to me is their lack of pitching. It has been apparent since day one this season and it certainly has popped up continuously throughout the year.
When a team does not have good pitching, it makes it very challenging to win games on a consistent level and they have found that out this season. Simply put, the guys they are putting out there from the rotation and the bullpen are just not enough to get the job done.
Even in some of the games where the offense played quite well, the pitching still let them down. They are the kind of team that can score 12 runs and still not feels confident getting the win.
Who knows how this series with the Pirates is going to go. In past years, it would have been a get-right series for them but that sure as hell is not the case this year.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates have not been anything to write home about this season but they have at least put on a better showing than the Reds. Well, who hasn’t been better than them so far?
Even though they do not own a great record, I actually thought the Buckos would be playing worse than they are right now. Through 30 games, I thought they would have been around the 10-win mark.
A big goal for this team in 2022 is being relevant. Can they play winning baseball and work from there?
It has been such a foregone conclusion that the season for Pittsburgh would already be over by summertime that we have forgotten what it looks like to see this club play meaningful baseball. When a squad is still very far away from being where they want to be, they have to at least be able to see a little bit of progress so they can build their future.
I think it is fair to say that they have some pieces for their future but still need a lot more to be in the mix for years to come. The pitching needs a lot of work in terms of starters and relievers while the lineup could just use some more juice.
If they do not go out there and address some of their key problems, it is going to be more of the same for them in the years to come. Maybe they could improve marginally, but I would doubt that it would be anything all that substantial
Based on how the Reds have played all season long, this is a series that the Pirates have to play well in. If they cannot beat this team, then there are even more issues with this crew.
Pittsburgh turns to Mitch Keller in this contest and boy, could he use a good outing right about now. The right is currently 0-4 with an ERA of 6.11.

Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Prediction:
This is a matchup between two bad teams at the moment. It is hard to get all that excited for this one.
Clearly, it can be hard to have all that much confidence in either one of these teams right now but I trust the Pirates more here. I feel they are the better team at the moment and can take advantage of that Cincy pitching.
Keller is not the better pitcher here but Mahle has not been anything great either. I do not expect great starts from either one of these guys but when it goes to the pen, I would rather side with Pittsburgh.
I cannot trust to lay the runs with the Buckos but the Moneyline is certainly affordable enough here.
