Cincinnati Reds

Cincinnati has lost two in a row at Pittsburgh after dominating the Pirates last season and even the one before that. The Reds and Pirates were supposed to be the two teams at the bottom of the standings before the season started but Pittsburgh is off to a fast start, while Cincinnati isn’t.

Joey Votto had a couple of knocks and his first RBI in Friday’s loss. All of Cincinnati’s regulars have some ugly averages: Suarez (.227), Votto (.217), Duvall (.150), Peraza (.150), Hamilton (.111).

Only Scooter Gennett is hitting early on. Cincinnati’s pitching staff is the weakest part of the team, too, so it’s no surprise it’s been a rough start considering the offensive numbers.

Pittsburgh Pirates

At 6–1 coming into Saturday, Pittsburgh is on top of the NL Central in the early going. Even if it loses on Saturday, it will be in first place to begin a second Sunday of the season.

It’s been a fast start for Gregory Polanco, the once highly-touted prospect who has disappointed, despite flashing some signs of brilliance in the early stages of his career.

The jury isn’t out on Polanco yet, but he’s had troublesome contact issues. That won’t be nearly as much of a problem if he’s hitting the ball out of the ballpark, which he already did once this series. He’s got two dingers and 11 RBIs on the season so far.
