Chicago White Sox
Throughout the course of the season, the White Sox have been a major disappointment and that is not hyperbole. If you have watched and broken down this team all season long, you would come to the same conclusion.
To be totally honest, I was not as giddy on this team as some of the pundits were but I still thought they could at least be pretty good. What they have done so far is not near that.
Regardless, it was understood that the expectations for Chicago in 2022 were pretty high. Given some of the players they have and the division they play in, that was certainly reasonable.
What we have seen in 2022 with this club is although they have talent, there are also plenty of holes on this roster and if they do not get addressed, it is hard for me to see them make that next big step.
Despite the fact that the pitching department gets praised a lot, I certainly would not call it a strength of theirs when you watch them play. To me, they have been too inconsistent in that area which has really hurt them.
Their offense, which is their best area, has been pretty good but I do not feel it is on the level as a year ago. They do still hit lefties well but I am not sold on their lineup totally.
The opening game with Toronto is a good example of their pitching not being what it needs to be. Even with Giolito on the hill, he still allowed 6 earned runs in just 4.2 innings of work. I get they are facing one of the best offenses in baseball but that has to be better.
Michael Kopech will be getting the ball in this one and it is hard for me to be all that critical of what he has done so far. He is currently 1-1 with an ERA of 1.29.
Toronto Blue Jays
For the majority of the season, it is still fair to say the Blue Jays have underperformed but there does appear to be a glimmer of hope with them.
You cannot help but notice that the team they are now is a much different team than they were at the beginning of the season. It appears as if they are really starting to figure things out and play as they should be.
It is important to note that what they did in the early part of the year was not bad baseball but it was not excellent. The way in which they were playing did not justify the sky-high expectations given to them before the year started.
The problem that plagued Toronto early on was their lack of consistency. It seemed like they were often getting in their own way and were trading wins and losses. Now, the winning is happening on a more regular basis and that has given them some extra confidence.
On paper, this is still the most talented team in the AL East and it made sense why they were the betting favorite to win it. The fact that they are playing how they ought to be is a scary sight for the rest of the AL and they should take notice.
Right now, the Jays have a record of 28-20 and they are 2nd in their division. New York still leads them by 5.5 games but the gap is not as wide as it once was.
These guys did just what they had to do in the opener with the Sox and frankly, this is a series they need to take advantage of. They are the better team and there really are no excuses not to take care of business.
Kevin Gausman went 5 innings, allowed 3 earned runs, and struck out 5 batters in the Tuesday victory. Hyun Jin Ryu is up next and he is a guy that is an important piece of this puzzle and needs to be better. I get that he was injured earlier but he has not pitched like the person they expected.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The White Sox are 13-38 in their last 51 games as a road dog.
- The White Sox are 2-5 in their last 7 games on turf.
- The Blue Jays are 22-7 in their last 29 games after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Blue Jays are 37-15 in their last 52 during game 2 of a series.
Chicago White Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays MLB Prediction:
I look for the Blue Jays to keep rolling here. They have certainly found some rhythm in their play and I do not see that changing here.
Ryu is still a question mark in this one and although I feel he can be solid, I am not expecting a gem either. With that, the runs are a little too many for me to lay here.
Kopech has been sharp this season but he will have his hands full with this offense. Even if he does his job, I am not sold on that bullpen doing their job.
My play is the Blue Jays on the Moneyline.
