Chicago is favored Saturday after they captured the series opener 3-2 on Friday. There looks to be some value on Kansas City in the pitching matchup for this one however.
Gio Gonzalez starts for Chicago after a horrible relief outing Sunday that has left his ERA at 14.73. KC starter Ronald Bolanos on the other hand didn’t allow an earned run vs. Cleveland his last time out – in just 2.0 IP though.
Chicago White Sox
It wasn’t the offensive explosion Chicago thought they would have Friday vs. untested rookie Kris Bubic, but the White Sox did just enough to earn the 3-2 win.
The Sox would’ve been in trouble if not for an Adam Engel three run HR however. That’s been the narrative for Chicago vs. KC as the Royals were 10-9 vs. the South Siders in 2019.
It’s hard to back Chicago with Gonzalez taking the hill. The lefty was solid last year with the Brewers posting a 3.50 ERA in 17 starts but was rocked for 6ER in 3.2 IP of relief last outing. Do we chalk that up to the Twins great offense?
Kansas City Royals
The Royals would’ve had a chance at Friday’s win if not for the mistake to Engel. That being said Kansas City is still only 0.5 GB from Chicago in the standings. Salvador Perez is also 5-9 (.556) in his career vs. Gonzalez.
Perez had 3 hits Friday but the rest of the team had just 5 total. The 3-2 loss killed some momentum after Thursday’s 5-3 win over a surprising Detroit team.
While Bolanos’ ERA is perfect on paper, he also threw just 2 IP vs. Cleveland and will be making another spot start Saturday. Who knows how long the Royals starter will go but it won’t be the traditional workload of a starter.
