Chicago White Sox
The White Sox bounced back to even their opening series with the Tigers on Saturday, 5–2.
Dylan Cease gave up only two hits and one run in five innings to earn the win. He struck out eight and walked three.
Yasmani Grandal homered for the first time in 2022. Eloy Jimenez drove in two more runs after collecting his first RBI on Friday.
AJ Pollock left the game with hamstring tightness and was replaced in right field by Andrew Vaughn.
The injury may not be serious but it’s not the sort of start White Sox fans were looking for in a player who has been known to miss lots of time with minor injuries.
Michael Kopech made 40 of his 44 appearances in short relief last season and he pitched to a 123 ERA+.
With Carlos Rodon gone to San Francisco, he begins the season in Chicago’s starting rotation.
He has thrown 83.2 innings in four seasons for Chicago since coming over from Boston in that Chris Sale deal prior to the 2018 season.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers won their opener in dramatic fashion but managed just two runs on Saturday afternoon.
Both came in the sixth, when Detroit chased Cease, but Chicago’s bullpen put down the rally.
Austin Meadows and Javier Baez, two of Detroit’s new players, had two hits each. Jeimer Candelario and Jonathan Schoop drove in the runs for the Tigers.
Casey Size didn’t walk any but only struck out two batters in five innings. The abundance of contact yielded five hits for Chicago and four earned runs to Mize’s name in his first start of the season.
Tarik Skubal threw 149 innings in his rookie season last year. He finished with about a league average ERA and seven more strikeouts per nine innings than walks.
The scouting report will be more detailed on the left-hander, whom the Tigers took in the ninth round in 2018, this season.
