The White Sox and Guardians will begin a series on Monday, July 11th from Progressive Field.
Lance Lynn and Cal Quantrill are the starters in this one.
Right now, Chicago is a very small favorite on the road with a total set at 9. It did open at 8.5 and has since crept up.
Chicago White Sox
The White Sox continues to be a team that proves to be inconsistent. With the expectations that surrounded them heading into the year, that certainly is not a word they hoped would be used to describe them.
All in all, what they have done so far has been a massive underperformance. It is not to say they have not played well at times, but it definitely has not happened as frequently as they wished it would be happening and that is a big concern.
One advantage they do have over a lot of other teams is they do not play in a tough division, which means they are still very much in the mix to win the AL Central. As of right now, Chicago is only 5 games behind the Twins with a record of 41-43.
As far as the Cental goes, I would still give the advantage to Minnesota over anyone else in it, but Cleveland and Chicago cannot be ruled out. If either one of those teams got really hot and the Twins began to struggle, one of them could very well win it.
The first two games of the series with the Tigers did not start off well for the Chi Sox, but they were able to bounce back and win the next two games by scores of 8-0 and 4-2. Of course, they would have liked to win the series, but at this point, they will take what they can get.
With the exception of one game in their last series, I thought the pitching did a good job. Even though they were not facing a great lineup, it was good to see them perform well on that side of the field.
Michael Kopech went 5.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs in the win on Sunday. After he left, the bullpen was great, as they allowed just 1 hit and 0 earned runs.
Getting the start in the opener is Lance Lynn and he has not looked great so far in his time back. I know it can take a while for pitchers to really get back to what they were, but he just has not been the same guy.
Cleveland Guardians
The Guardians have played decent for most of the season, but they simply have not been playing good ball as of late.
Coming into this game, they have lost 8 of their last 10 games. Every team is going to go through rough periods, but having a stretch like that at this part of the season is just not acceptable.
It was understood that these guys had their struggles with some of the better teams, but they still had been pretty good against the teams they should beat. Well, even beating the weaker teams has not happened much in their last two series.
After getting swept by the Tigers, they followed that up by losing two of three to the Royals. Given how much every game means to them right now, those kinds of performances are just simply not acceptable and they are going to have to get better.
Aside from a 13-1 win on Saturday, Cleveland did not do a lot that impressed me in their last series, which really is not acceptable when they are facing a team like the Royals.
In the loss on Sunday, Zach Plesac gave his team a chance to compete, but the offense just did not get anything going against Greinke & co.
This series with the White Sox is going to be a critical one for the Guardians. Both of these teams come into this game with similar records and these head-to-head matchups could end up being very important when the season is over.
Cal Quantrill will be on the mound in this one and he has been solid this season, but it has not been anything that really stands out. He comes into this game with a record of 4-5 and an ERA of 3.86.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The White Sox are 12-4 in their last 16 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The White Sox are 4-1 in their last 5 road games.
- The Guardians are 1-4 in their last 5 games after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Guardians are 0-5 in their last 5 during game 1 of a series.
Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins MLB Prediction:
The White Sox have been tough to trust this season, but I do look for them to start off this series in the right direction.
Lynn has yet to find his groove this season, but I still view him as the better arm and do trust him more than Quantrill in this spot.
It would not surprise me if the game is close when all is said and done, but I think the offense for Chicago will be too much here.
Give me Chicago laying this short price on the road.
