Chicago had its chances but St. Louis’ bullpen was stellar in relief of Miles Mikolas, who went seven innings himself, in a 2–1 win.
Carlos Martinez threw a perfect eighth inning and Jordan Hicks held the Cubs hitless in the ninth and tenth, setting the stage for Matt Carpenter to walk the Cubbies off in the bottom-half.

With the bases loaded and only one out, Carpenter lifted a fly ball down the left field line with Chicago’s outfield in. The ball appeared to bounce into the stands, though Carpenter only got credit for a single and St. Louis a 2–1 win. Perhaps a technicality cost some the runline.
St. Louis Cardinals
Marcel Ozuna hit 50 RBIs on the season on Friday night but some of the Cardinals’ recent struggles can be traced back to his lack of extra-base production.
Ozuna has had a nice season, with a 125 OPS+ to this point but he’s driven in so many runs because he comes up with so many runners on base, hitting behind Carpenter, DeJong, and Goldschmidt. Ozuna finished the month of May with just 13 extra-base hits.
