The Cubs will be on the road to wrap things up with the Giants on Sunday Night Baseball.
Adrian Sampson and Carlos Rodon are the expected starters in this one.
San Francisco is a heavy favorite at home in this one. I have not seen a lot of movement from the opening total of 7.5.
Chicago Cubs
With a 5-4 loss on Saturday, the Cubs have now lost two of three games in this series and will look to go for the split on Sunday night.
I did not think these guys played horribly in their last game, but they just were not able to really come through when it mattered the most.
Drew Smyly had to face off with a tough offense for the Giants and he certainly would have liked to pitch better than he did.
The lefty went four innings while allowing seven hits and five earned runs. That is not the kind of outing he or his team was looking for.
Something that was frustrating for Chicago here is they were not able to do a lot with the ten hits they recorded. When a team gets that many knocks, the hope is that it translates to a lot of runs, but that was not the case.
The Cubs were able to rally in the 9th inning as they scored 3 runs but it still was not enough at the end. Things got a little interesting at the end, but it was the Giants that ultimately held on.
Throughout the course of the season, this crew has had many games like this one where they have been close, but have not been able to get it done. Those are the sorts of things that happen to struggling teams.
Next up in the rotation is Adrian Sampson and he really has not been all that great this season. He is going to have his hands full when he tries to slow down this offense in the finale.
San Francisco Giants
Even with the victory on Saturday, the Giants are just 2-8 in their last 10 games. To say that they have been disappointing this season would be an understatement.
They have been able to take two of three from the Cubs here and they are going to need to make it three of four by the time Sunday is over. When facing a team as bad as this, there really are not a lot of excuses to be losing ball games.
In their win on Saturday, Jakob Junis went 4 innings while not allowing an earned run and he punched out 4 batters. I am sure his team would have liked to get more length from him, but he did what he had to do out there.
Tyler Rogers went 2 innings and allowed no earned runs, but things did not exactly go smoothly after he left the game.
Jarlin Garcia lasted just 0.1 innings while allowing 2 hits and an earned run. Yunior Marte went 1.2 innings while allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs. Dominic Leone, who recorded the save, still allowed an earned run in the 9th inning.
Offensively, I liked what I saw from the Giants. Although they did not do a ton against the bullpen, they did have a good plan of attack against Smyly and were able to get to him effectively.
San Francisco is not going to complain about a win, but I still think it is pretty telling that they are playing stressful games against the Cubs. I get teams can be tougher than their record might indicate, but the really good teams just bury teams like Chicago.
Carlos Rodon will get the ball in this one and he has been up and down in his time with the Giants. The lefty has not looked too good in his last two starts and that will have to be different when he gets the ball here.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Cubs are 11-24 in their last 35 games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Cubs are 8-20 in their last 28 games following a loss.
- The Giants are 5-1 in their last 6 games vs. the NL Central.
- The Giants are 2-10 in their last 12 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco Giants MLB Prediction:
To me, this is one where the Giants match up pretty well and I see them putting that on display.
In his career, Sampson has been unreliable at best and I just do not have a ton of confidence in him being able to slow down San Fran here.
Rodon has not had his best stuff of late, but I feel that can change when he faces a lineup he is more than capable of keeping in check.
It might not be totally one-sided, but I like the Giants laying the runs at home here.
