Chicago Cubs
Yu Darvish was huge in Tuesday’s opener between the Cubs and Mets. He went eight innings, gave up five hits, one run, and struck out seven to just one walk in a 5–2 win.
Brandon Kintzler came in and gave up a solo home run to the Polar Bear but otherwise, he made the ninth inning a clean one.

Marcus Stroman held the Cubs scoreless and matched Darvish through four innings but the Cubs broke through with two in the fifth and two in the sixth. Javy Baez and Addison Russell combined to drive in all five runs and each had three hits.
Big Jon Lester is in decline, this his fourteenth season in the big leagues. He’s still won more than he’s lost this season and his ERA+ is still in triple-digits, if barely. He’s also still a big game pitcher who wants the ball in these spots. I expect good things.
New York Mets
Stroman was as expected on Tuesday.

He was quite good for most of the day but gave it up at the end. He seems to give it up at some point before the departs. He’s a tough one for the manager to deal with.
Going into Wednesday’s game, which pits Noah Syndergaard against Kyle Hendricks, the Mets are just three games back of the Cubs, who hold that last playoff spot in the NL.
That lead isn’t insurmountable but the problem is the Phillies and Brewers are between the Mets and October, too.
If Syndergaard wins on Wednesday, Jacob deGrom will have a chance in a rubber match on Thursday. He hasn’t had a sub-par start since May 17, when he gave up six runs in five innings.
His ERA has dropped from 3.98 to 2.56 since then.
