The Cubs and Dodgers will be squaring off for the middle game of their series on Friday evening.
As most would think, LA is a very big favorite at home in this one.
Keegan Thompson and Tyler Anderson are the starters and that is a better matchup than it sounds.
Chicago Cubs
There is no question that the Cubs have really struggled this season. Unless something out of the ordinary took place, it was understood they would not do a ton of winning during this campaign.
They are clearly a team that is trying to rebuild their team and there are plenty of players on this roster that are not household names. It is not impossible for them to be relevant in the future, but it will likely still be a very long time.
When a team lets go of a lot of its key players, it makes it very hard to get right back and be competitive. Even though fans do not want to hear this, it is going to take time and there is a lot of patience that is required.
As I look at this team, there are some players they can build around, but I still sit here and think they are very lacking. Chicago still needs to add a ton of talent on this roster before they can even think of being what they were just a few years ago.
Personally, I feel 15 games below .500 is right where they belong. Given their current situation, it really would not be realistic to expect much more from them.
Something Chicago should be able to build off is what they did in their last series, as they took 2 of 3 from the Brewers. I know it is just one series and they did lose the opener with the Dodgers, but it at least shows they can hang with some of the better teams in the NL when they are on their game.
Mark Leiter Jr. went 5 innings and allowed 4 earned runs in the loss on Thursday. I thought he gave his team a chance out there, but the offense was just not able to do enough in the end.
Keegan Thompson will be on the mound in this one and he has looked good this season. The innings pitched per game is a little concerning, but he has been able to deliver other impressive numbers this season and there is no question he has upside.
LA Dodgers
The Dodgers just keep on playing good baseball and they continue to look like the team they should have been the whole time.
There was never a time this season where I thought they were playing truly bad baseball, but I did feel they could be better and more consistent, but it was a matter of time before they really got it cranking.
Even with some of their key injuries, they still have enough talent to be very competitive and one of the best teams in baseball. Not every team has that luxury, but they have been able to use it to their advantage a lot this season.
The offense could certainly be producing at a better rate, but they still have so many good hitters in that lineup and at any moment, they could explode for a bunch of runs. This unit might not be putting up the numbers some folks thought, but they are still very dangerous in that area.
When it comes to the pitching, they have dealt with lots of injuries, but I do feel they have been able to handle them pretty well. Of course, they will need to be fully loaded when it matters most, but they can get by with what they have now.
Guys Like Tyler Anderson and Tony Gonsolin have really stepped up in big ways this season. I do not think people are surprised they are pitching well, but I do not think many had them having the kind of success they have had so far.
In the opener, Gonsolin was once again impressive, as he went 7 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. The strikeout numbers were not very high, but he was still very effective and was able to give his team good length.
Now, it is Anderson’s turn and he will look to just keep up what he has done the whole year. The lefty comes into the game with a record of 9-1, an ERA of 3.09, and a WHIP of 1.06.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Cubs are 29-59 in their last 88 vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Cubs are 7-20 in their last 27 Friday games.
- The Dodgers are 39-12 in their last 51 during game 2 of a series.
- The Dodgers are 51-25 in their last 76 after scoring 5 runs or more in their previous game.
Chicago Cubs vs. LA Dodgers MLB Prediction:
The Dodgers followed a simple formula in the opener and I could see them doing more of the same in the middle game.
Anderson just has not disappointed a lot this season and I do not see him slowing down when facing Chicago.
Thompson has been sharp this year, but he still is going to be in for a challenge here and I do not trust the bullpen for the Cubs all that much.
I like the Dodgers on the Runline here.
