Chicago Cubs
The expectations around the league were not very high for the Cubs heading into the season. I am sure inside the locker room, they feel like they will be good, but that is going to be a very tall order.
There is no question that Chicago has some players on their roster, but they are in rebuild mode at the moment and teams do not just get turned around overnight.
When you no longer have players like Rizzo, Bryant, and Baez, there is no question that you will go through some hard times. The hope for them is that the guys they got in return will pan out, but there is clearly no guarantee in that one.
Through the first 8 games, this team sits with a record of 4-4. They have shown glimpses of being a decent team, but I do not think they will show that on a consistent enough level as the season gets deeper.
After winning the first game of the series, they dropped the next two to Colorado. Chicago will look to salvage the split when they square off on Sunday.
In the most recent game of the series, the Rockies took care of them by a score of 9-6. The offense was there, but the pitching did not do their job at all to keep that Colorado offense in check.
Mark Leiter Jr. went 3.1 innings and allowed 7 earned runs in their last loss. It is kind of hard to win ball games when you started gives you that kind of performance.
Drew Smyly will look to put forth a strong performance on Sunday and there is reason to believe that he can. He looked good in his last time out and if he is on, this is a lineup that he should be able to navigate through.
Colorado Rockies
I really did not know what to expect from the Rockies this season. If I had to guess, they will not have a ton of success this season, but maybe they could surprise me.
As we know it is a very long season, but I did not see them getting off to this kind of start. The question is whether they will be able to maintain it or if they will eventually go back to being a middling team in the National League.
At the moment, this team has a record of 6-2. They will look to get win number 7 on Sunday when they face off with the Cubs in the last game of the series.
This group swept the Texas Rangers in a two-game set before this series where they outscored them by 10-5. The pitching for them was strong in that series.
In the short season, they have also won a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers which is certainly a good sign. It could be a fluke type of thing that happened in April, but they are hoping they can sustain that kind of success against their division rival for the entirety of the season.
After the offense looked flat in game 1, they came to life and have looked quite good in the following two games with the Cubs, as they scored 6 runs on Friday and 9 runs on Saturday.
Antonio Senzatela went 5 innings and allowed 1 earned run in the win on Saturday. The bullpen did not exactly do their job, but the team still got the result they wanted to get.
Austin Gomber gets the nod on Sunday and will look to keep this Chicago offense in check. He currently does not have a decision on the year, but he has an ERA of 5.79.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Cubs are 2-4 SU in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone under in 4 of the Cubs’ last 6 games on the road.
- The Rockies are 6-1 SU in their last 7 games.
- The Rockies are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games at home.
Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies MLB Prediction:
The Cubs will have to be better in this one than they have been in the past couple of games of the series.
I am not saying that Chicago will win here, but I do feel they can keep it close.
For me, the 1.5 runs are too much to lay with this Colorado team at home.
Give me the Cubs on the run line here.
