Three runs in the ninth gave Chicago a 5-4 win on Thursday and a series split in Washington.
Tommy La Stella got it to within one with an RBI single and Jon Jay followed it up with a two-run double that gave Chicago the lead and the win.
Jon Lester gave up one run in six innings but Carl Edwards Jr. blew his chance to get the win when he gave up three runs in the seventh that made it 4-2 Washington.
Mike Montgomery will start for the Cubs in Cincinnati Friday, where the Cubs hope to get Kris Bryant back after he twisted his ankle earlier this week.
Cincinnati Reds
The Brewers waxed the Reds at Great American on Thursday but Cincinnati still emerged the winner of the three-game series.
Homer Bailey gave up six runs in three innings and his ERA dropped from 43.20 to 27.00. The bullpen threw 92 pitches , which is never helpful ahead of a weekend series.
But Scott Feldman has eaten 13 innings in his last two starts and his ERA is approaching 4.00 thanks to just four earned runs allowed in that span.
Feldman started against the Cubs in mid-May and didn’t have a good day, though. He gave up five hits and seven runs (five earned) before departing in the third inning.
