Chicago Cubs
When you go based on the wins and losses, it has been not been a very good season for the Cubs and frankly, it was not expected to be one. It was understood that this team was in a rebuild and it was not going to get turned around with the snap of a finger.
Clearly, this season for Chicago is not going to be measured based on playoff appearances or being a contender. Instead, they need to know what kind of team they will have for the future and how they will improve their current roster to be more competitive in the future years.
A lot of fans are probably not going to want to hear this, but it certainly is going to take a lot of patience with this team. Even when they won the World Series in 2016, it is important to remember how bad they were in a lot of those previous seasons. Unless there is some sort of outlier, these rebuilds typically take a lot of time and there is often a lot of losing that is involved.
As I look at this roster, I certainly see some players that will they will want to build around but they will need more than that to compete at a high level. It is good to have prospects and it is important that they develop but that is not the whole story.
To me, Chicago is really going to have to open the checkbook and spend some serious money to attract proven players that can help this club on both sides of the diamond. If they do not do that, I have a hard time seeing them turn it around all that quickly.
As of right now, they need some serious work in a lot of areas of their team. Their offense is not high-powered, the rotation is hit or miss, and the bullpen is lacking a lot of the time. There is no question they can improve those areas but will they?
In this mini-series with their city rival, they should not feel like they are overmatched. It will not be an easy one for them but it is certainly one they can take care of.
Keegan Thompson will get the ball in this one and he has been one of the few bright spots for this club. He is currently 4-0 with an ERA of 1.54.
Chicago White Sox
There have been plenty of teams that have been disappointing and the White Sox have been at the top of that list. They have come nowhere near living up to their expectations and it looks as if they will continue to be mediocre for the rest of the year.
Despite the fact that the Sox have not played well, I do feel it is important to recognize there was a lot of hyperbole regarding this team in the eyes of the media. If you listened to how some of the pundits broke down this squad, you would have thought they had the ’98 Yankees trotting out there.
The reality of the situation is they should be playing better than they have been but at the same time, their poor play thus far is not the biggest shock out there. They are a flawed team and although a lot of people do not say so, it is pretty clear.
Chicago still has an awful long way to go if they wish to be thought of as a contender in the AL. Just because you win 90+ games and win a soft Central does not mean you are on the level of the Yankees, Astros, Rays, etc.
The frustrating part for the fans and the team is all of this was true a year ago. It was clear they were a playoff fraud and were going to get totally exposed by a more complete and talented Astros team. If you looked at how they performed against any of the top teams in 2021, you knew what would happen there.
Although you might hear about great their pitching is, the reality is it is below average at best. Cease is wildly inconsistent. Keuchel looks like a shell of himself and they are lucky if he can make it 3 innings. The only reliable starter thus far has been Giolito and even some of his stats are a bit misleading.
Also, the bullpen cannot be let off the hook. For as bad as the starters were in the Boston series, so were the relievers. The fact that the Red Sox scored 16 runs on 2 different occasions against them is truly embarrassing to the entire staff.
The front office already knows this but I will say it anyway. If you actually feel you will win a World Series with this group, then you are out of your mind. This is a team that needs a ton of work on both sides of the field and until they make serious changes, they will be decent but will not be above and beyond.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Cubs are 28-64 in their last 92 games as a dog.
- The Cubs are 3-7 in their last 10 during game 1 of a series.
- The White Sox are 5-0 in their last 5 interleague home games.
- The White Sox are 13-3 in their last 16 games vs. the NL Central.
Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox MLB Prediction:
After the White Sox got embarrassed by the Red Sox in their last series, this is a good chance for them to get back on track.
Cueto is certainly not the same guy he once was but I still feel he can be effective here. If he has a good pitch mix going, being able to contain this lineup is reasonable for him.
I feel that Thompson can be solid here but not totally keep the Sox off the board. Once the game goes into the pen, it is hard to have confidence in either one of these teams.
Normally I would not lay a price like this but I do not trust the Sox laying the run line. I will pay a little more juice in this spot.
