The Red Sox and Blue Jays will start a critical series in Toronto starting on Monday evening.
Toronto is currently a pretty good size favorite in this one with the total sitting at 9.
Connor Seabold will be going against Kevin Gausman in this one.
Boston Red Sox
As each game goes by, the Red Sox continues to be more impressive and more impressive. It is hard to knock what this team has been doing for a while now.
Not only are we seeing a team that is playing a high level of baseball, but they are also a very confident group, which is so important. When those two are combined, it makes for a very dangerous ball club.
By now, everyone knows the Red Sox were 10-19 at one point in the season, but that seems like history now. The team they were then and the team they are now are two totally different ones.
Boston knew starting on Friday that they had a winnable series with Cleveland and they could definitely do some damage. When the final out was recorded on Sunday, that proved to be the case.
In the series with the Guardians, they got plenty of production from the offensive side of things, but the starting pitching and bullpen were also very strong. Not too many folks were worried about the runs being scored, but there was some concern about how the pitching would hold up during the long haul.
A guy who has been much better in terms of giving length has been Rich Hil and he produced again on Sunday. The lefty went 6 innings, allowed 1 earned run, and punched out 5 batters in the 8-3 victory.
Once again, pitching is going to be a clear topic of conversation in this series with the Jays. Given the kind of lineup they have, the Sox are going to have to have a very good plan of attack to keep their hitters in check. There will be some added responsibility given to the bullpen with no Tanner Houck and it will be a good test for them to see if they can handle it.
Getting called up to the majors to start game 1 on Monday is Connor Seabold. He does not have any experience with the big club, but he has been impressive in the minors. He will now have the tall task of keeping this offense in check.
Toronto Blue Jays
Just as the Red Sox continue to impress and are headed in the right direction, the Blue Jays have really been doing the exact opposite of that and it is beginning to cost them.
A common theme that has surrounded this team in 2022 so far is underachieving. They simply have not played up to their capability based on the players they have and as time goes on, it does not look like they are going to really turn it around.
Sure, they have shown glimpses of getting back on track and playing more consistently, but it never seems to last. Really, you are just waiting for them to disappoint once again.
While the Jays keep on trading wins and losses, other teams in their division continue playing at a very high level. If they are not careful, they could find themselves in 4th place pretty soon.
Aside from a nice 9-4 win on Friday, their series with the Brewers was not pretty. Milwaukee looked like the better team out there and definitely seemed to play with more urgency than their opponent.
The pitching woes continue to be put on display and the guy who struggled the most was Jose Berrios. It is getting to the point now where his team cannot hide him out there. He is clearly holding the rotation back, but you still see him getting put out there every 5th day.
In the loss on Sunday, the righty went just 2.2 innings, gave up 8 hits, and allowed 8 earned runs. You would like to say that type of outing is a rarity, but he has delivered plenty of terrible starts this season and will likely continue to do so as the season keeps going.
Now, the Jays will be turning to their ace, Kevin Gausman to open things up. He has been hit hard at times, but for the most part, he has been as advertised. With them playing a team as dangerous as the Sox right now, he is the guy they should want on the hill.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Red Sox are 12-2 in their last 14 when their opponent allowed 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Red Sox are 6-0 in their last 6 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Blue Jays are 9-4 in their last 13 Monday games.
- The Blue Jays are 3-7 in their last 10 games.
Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays MLB Prediction:
The Sox will look to keep up what they did in their last series while the Jays will look to make some adjustments starting in the opener.
Clearly, Toronto should feel good with their chances when they have Gausman going, but I do not see this being an easy one for them. Boston is more than capable of getting to him and that shaky pen.
Realistically, it is hard to know what to expect from Seabold when he faces this team. Regardless, if the Sox can get some production on offense and the bullpen keeps up what they have been doing, I can see them being in this one at the end.
Give me the Red Sox catching the 1.5 runs on the road.
