The Red Sox will be at the trop to take on the Rays for the third game of their series on Wednesday evening.
As expected, Tampa is a big favorite at home with McClanahan on the mound.
The total in this game opened at 6.5 and it is now up to 7.
Boston Red Sox
Not too long ago, the Red Sox turned their season around and were playing like one of the hottest teams in baseball. Now, they are starting to stumble again and really, just are not playing well.
It was understood how tough the month of July was going to be for this team. Given how many times they were going to face teams from their division, they were going to have to elevate their game and they just have not been able to do so.
Sure, they ended their series against the Yankees with two wins, but that has not translated so far to the series with the Rays. If they are not careful, it could be Tampa who ends up having a decent size lead over them in just a little bit.
All in all, this is still a team that has struggled with consistency this season. It really did seem like they were going away from those days, but they have reverted back to their old ways and it is going to be hard to get back where they want.
In the 3-2 loss on Tuesday, it was good to see Chris Sale back on the mound. The lefty went 5 innings while punching out 5 batters and not allowing an earned run.
The bullpen was not able to hold the lead and they also started throwing the ball around the park, which led to Tampa scoring the eventual game-winning run. Given how important each and every one of these games is, those sorts of errors just cannot happen.
Also, Alex Verdugo committed a baserunning blunder, as he got picked off third base, which really killed their rally late in the game. A lot of this series has been Tampa playing well, but it also has been partly Boston shooting themselves in the foot.
After not taking care of business in the first two, matters only get more difficult for them on Wednesday when they have to take on Shane McClanahan, who is one of the best in the game. The Sox should be a team that is playing with a lot of urgency, but that is not something that is always sensed when watching them.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays have been starting to play some better baseball and I think they are getting closer to where they want to be.
I still do not think they have found it totally. Remember, this is a team that did get swept by the Reds. Still, I like the direction they are headed in and I feel their best baseball is still ahead of them.
Given how close the Rays and Red Sox are in the standings, it was understood that these head-to-head matchups were going to be huge. So far, Tampa has done a very good job against Boston and that just could be the difference in them hosting the Wild Card Game.
Coming into this ball game, these guys hold a record of 47-40 and they lead the Sox by 0.5 a game, and the Blue Jays by 1.5 games. Of course, the whole season is not going to be determined by this one series, but they will look for ways to gain ground on Boston in any way they can.
Something that I have liked from this club in the first two games of this series is their ability to win in different ways. In the opener, the offense dominated and they were able to get the 10-5 win. With the second game being much closer, they had to rely on their pitching more, which is certainly something they can do.
On Tuesday, I really liked what they were able to do once Chris Sale left. They knew they would have chances to score once the bullpen came in and they also took advantage of the physical and mental errors by Boston.
Corey Kluber went 6 innings, allowed 2 earned runs, and punched out 7 batters in their last win. After his strong outing, the bullpen did just what they had to do to secure the victory.
Shane McClanahan gets the ball in this one and this guy has been one of the best in the business this season. His record, ERA, and strikeout numbers have all been very impressive and those are just to name a few. No matter how you look at it, this guy has been terrific and he will look to keep it up against his rival.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:

- The Red Sox are 2-5 in their last 7 vs. the AL East.

Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays MLB Prediction:
The Red Sox have not shown me a lot that I like in this series and I do not see them changing that in this one.
Right now, Tampa is the better team and they are also making fewer mistakes. It seems simple, but that goes a long way and I just trust them more in this spot.
With their ace on the mound, I expect the Rays to get the job done behind his strong outing.
I do not love laying the runs here, but I will go Tampa on the Moneyline.
