Boston Red Sox
Boston won its final two versus New York this weekend to earn a split of the four-game series.
That kept it in second place in the American League East Division and snapped a streak of eight consecutive series losses against divisional opponents to open the season.
But while a split is an improvement, Boston has now failed to win each of its last four series, including one at home against Tampa Bay last week.
Now, after playing Tampa and New York for seven games in seven days at home last week, the Red Sox go on the road to do the exact same thing.
This time, it will be four in Tampa and three in New York over the weekend.
For Brayan Bello, Boston’s starting pitcher in this game, it represents a chance to him to have a mulligan at his first career big league start.
His first shot at the Show came against Tampa at Fenway last Wednesday. He took the loss, allowing four runs in four innings and walking more (3) than he struck out (2).
Now he gets the chance to go back out there against the same team and try again immediately. It must feel like a welcome opportunity to one of the most highly-prized pitching prospects in the game.
Rafael Devers didn’t play in that game Bello started. He did come back to play the next two against New York but sat down again on Saturday and Sunday with lower back troubles.
Manager Alex Cora does not seem to think the injury serious but he’s taking no chances with his star third baseman.
When the Red Sox ruled Devers out Sunday, it was just for the game and nothing more than that, though Cora did say “maybe” Monday too.
There’s a chance he plays this one but don’t count on it, either.
Tampa Bay Rays
Meanwhile, Tampa Bay was in Cincinnati this weekend, where it was swept in three straight by the last-place Reds.
Wander Franco broke a bone in his hand on Saturday. He will miss months.
Tampa Bay has shifted Taylor Walls over to shortstop, where it will not miss anything defensively.
Neither Walls and his .164 batting average, nor Yu Chang, Franco’s true replacement, who is hitting .153, can replicate Franco’s offensive presence in the middle of the lineup, however.
The Rays are hurting on offense and in the pitching staff with Jeffrey Springs out now too.
Manager Kevin Cash hasn’t announced a starter for this game but it could be Corey Kluber, who hasn’t pitched since he beat Bello last Wednesday.
Kluber gave up three hits and no runs in six innings in that one to even his record to 1–1 against Boston this season.

Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays MLB Prediction:
Bello pitches better, for one.
This guy’s stuff plays at the big league level. His command was just a little bit off in his first start but that’s to be expected.
He will be more comfortable and confident in just attacking hitters the same way he does at the minor league level. He will only have extra confidence with Franco out of the lineup.
The Red Sox may miss Devers but guys are producing in his absence, including Jeter Downs, who made some nice plays with the bat and his feet over the weekend against New York.
And JD Martinez snapped a home run drought last night in the comeback win. He could be on the cusp of a little hot streak.
