The Red Sox will be in Pittsburgh to start a series with the Pirates on Tuesday evening.
Nick Pivetta will be going for the Sox and Mitch Keller is going for the Buckos.
In this game, Boston is a small road favorite. A lot of places opened the total at 9, but it has since gone down to 8.5.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox still have a long way to go before they can get where they want to be, but they did show some good signs over the weekend and will hope to carry that over to Pittsburgh.
Based on how they have been playing, I do not think a lot of people picked them to win the series against the Yankees, but they really played some solid baseball and were able to get the job done.
Offensively, they did not do a whole lot against New York, but the pitching was very solid including shutting out their rival on Sunday.
In the three games they played last time out, Boston was able to get strong outings from Nate Eovaldi, Kutter Crawford, and Michael Wacha. Also, the bullpen really stepped up when they were called upon in those games.
Being able to hold a team like the Yankees to just five runs in three games is never easy and if a team was going to do it, I probably would not have picked the 2022 Red Sox to do it.
Look, this team still has a tall task ahead of them if they wish to really get back into the mix of the AL Wild Card. It certainly is possible, but a lot of things will still have to go right for them.
Just a little bit ago, I really thought the Red Sox squandered an opportunity when they failed to do damage against a very beatable Royals team. They will once again have a similar opportunity against a bad team and the results have to be different for them in this series.
Nick Pivetta will open things up for them on the mound and he is coming off a solid outing against the Braves. He was much more consistent in the earlier part of the season, but he is still mostly reliable despite having some shaky outings mixed in there.
Pittsburgh Pirates
It has definitely been a bad season for the Pirates in 2022 and they are coming into this game with a four-game losing streak and are just 2-8 in their last 10 tries.
Although all of the games were close, they did not have anything to show for it in their last series with the Giants as they ended up getting swept.
Their offense did come to life in their 8-7 loss on Sunday, but that part of their game was pretty quiet and it is hard to win games like that given who their opponent was.
On Friday and Saturday combined, Pittsburgh scored just three runs. I do not care who the team is, you cannot expect to do all that well when scoring that few runs.
There was a time this season when this group appeared to have some life, but they are pretty much back to where a lot of people thought they would be.
Right now, the Pirates hold a record of 45-70, and they are right in the basement of the NL Central. It is going to be a long time before they are competing with Milwaukee or St. Louis for that division.
Boston has not been some great team in 2022, so this series could be winnable for this club, but even with all of their flaws, their opponent is a much better team than they are and can present them with a lot of issues.
Next up in the rotation for them is Mitch Keller and the numbers are still not great, but he has been better in his last multiple starts. It has been a little bit since he has had a really bad outing, but that could always change when going against this offense.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Red Sox are 43-13 in their last 56 interleague road games.
- The Red Sox are 7-3 in their last 10 games following an off day.
- The Pirates are 5-12 in their last 17 Tuesday games.
- The Pirates are 9-23 in their last 32 during game 1 of a series.
Boston Red Sox vs. Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Prediction:
It could end up meaning nothing, but I thought what the Red Sox did in their last series was encouraging and this game is a good opportunity for them to keep it up.
Although Keller has been sharp of late, I trust Pivetta and the bullpen for the Sox more in this spot. The pitching department for the Pirates is not exactly a part of their game that I have a ton of confidence in.
Boston might not smoke Keller, but I do think they can at least get some off of him and then do more against their relievers.
I like the Red Sox as the small favorite on the road.
