The Red Sox and A’s will be squaring off in the second game of their series on Saturday, June 4th.
Nick Pivetta will be going against Paul Blackburn in this one.
Boston is a small favorite on the road with the total set at 7.5.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox continue to prove that they are an up-and-down baseball team. From a game to a game you do not know what to get from them and that is certainly not how they wished to be playing.
When you look at the whole season, they have been very inconsistent but there is no question they have been playing better of late. It still is going to take a while for them to get where they want but it is a start.
Just when folks thought Boston might have found something with their play, they did drop 3 of 5 from the Orioles and then split a 2-game series with the Reds. Simply put, they should have been able to have more success against both of those teams.
Realistically, I do not know if anyone had this team being a true threat in the AL but they did have them at least being competitive. What they have done so far is certainly not living up to expectations.
As I look at the reasons for this type of play, a big part of it comes down to the pitching and more specifically, the bullpen. It was understood that part of their game was going to struggle this season and that has held true.
If the Sox do not fix that part of their game, it is hard for me to envision them making much of this season. A strong pen is such a vital piece to a winning team and they simply do not have that at the moment.
They did start off the series how they liked with a 7-2 win over Oakland. The Sox did just what they had to do and will look for similar results the rest of the series.
Nathan Eovaldi tossed 6 innings of no-run ball on Friday and he also recorded 8 strikeouts. Nick Pivetta will look for similar results when he takes the bump on Saturday evening.
Oakland A’s
There is no question that it has been a down year for the A’s. There have not been all that many good things to say about this group.
Going into the season, it was understood that they were going to have a down season. I do not think anyone in the baseball world actually thought Oakland would be all that competitive in 2022.
As you look at some of the players that are no longer on this roster, it makes sense as to why they are struggling. It is hard to lose high-caliber guys and expect to keep playing well.
There are still quite a few young and inexperienced players on this roster and it is going to take time for them to develop and contribute how they want to.
Because the A’s routinely do not have a high payroll like some other teams, it is hard to imagine that they are going to acquire some well-known players. They will have to work with what they got and that could mean multiple years of irrelevancy to come.
In a series like this with Boston, you knew the pitching for Oakland was going to be in for a big challenge and that certainly was the case in game 1. It is hard for me to picture them keeping those bats in check for the remainder of the series.
James Kapriellian went 5.1 innings and allowed 4 earned runs in the loss on Friday. The bullpen gave up some more runs when he left and the offense did not do a whole lot, which led to the loss.
The A’s will now turn to Paul Blackburn and he has been one of the few bright spots for them. He comes into this game with a record of 5-1 and an ERA of 2.15.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Red Sox are 6-0 in their last 6 vs AL West.
- The Red Sox are 8-3 in their last 11 games as a road favorite.
- The A’s are 19-39 in their last 58 games as an underdog.
- The A’s are 10-25 in their last 35 games.
Boston Red Sox vs. Oakland A’s MLB Prediction:
The Red Sox need to use this series to get back on track and they did just what they planned on in the opener.
It would not surprise me if we saw more of the same in this one. Boston is just a much better team and I do not see them stopping here.
Pivetta has certainly seen mixed results this season but he has been better in his last multiple outings. When facing this team, he should be able to keep it up.
I like the Red Sox laying the short price on the road here.
