After taking two of three from Tampa Bay and three of four from New York last week, Boston is 0–2 against Tampa this week with a finale on Thursday night before four more with the Yankees, this time in New York, immediately after.
The Sox have just begun a string of 17 games in 16 days (Saturday in the Bronx is a doubleheader) and the defending World Series champs may not still be in contention when it’s all over.

Boston is a full 2.0 back of Oakland, who is a half-game behind Tampa Bay. The Rays enter Thursday’s finale in Boston four losses back of Cleveland, who’s on top of the Wild Card.
Eduardo Rodriguez has been the best the Sox have to offer, of late and just about all season. Not even he could get through the sixth inning in his last start against the Yankees. And he had pretty good stuff.
New York Yankees
It has me thinking the Yanks could make this one a blowout. They’ve seen Rodriguez plenty and while he’s a pretty good talent, he gives it up. I’ve got a feeling this could be one of those times.
Thing is, Boston hit James Paxton hard last week at Fenway. He’ll be Rodriguez’s opponent on Friday night.

The Yankees didn’t make a move for a starter at the Trade Deadline. Houston already had a rotation far better than New York’s before adding Zack Greinke. Paxton came over to be an ace; even if Luis Severino comes back as the number one guy, there is incredible pressure on Paxton to step up when it matters most for a team that has considered itself the AL frontrunner all season.
