Boston Red Sox
Boston lost, 6–1, in Houston on Wednesday.
Tommy Pham went 1-for-4 with a double in his Red Sox debut and new catcher Reese McGuire went 2-for-3, which accounted for half of Boston’s hits.
The Red Sox didn’t score until Xander Bogaerts’ solo homer in the ninth. Jose Urquidy thoroughly dominated, striking out ten in seven innings without walking a batter.
But Boston still won the series to get back to .500 before its road trip continues through Kansas City.
And the Red Sox plan to welcome Eric Hosmer at first base to face the team he broke into the Majors with and won a World Series for in 2015.
The Padres paid $44 million of Hosmer’s remaining salary as part of the deal and Boston won’t have to pay the first baseman even as much as $1 million for any of the three full seasons that follow this one.
That gives Boston a left-handed bat at first base that it has been missing but even more importantly, a Gold Glove Award winner. Hosmer has won four of them, though none since 2017.
Boston hasn’t announced a starting pitcher for this game after Nick Pivetta throws game one and before Nathan Eovaldi goes in game three.
Last time through the rotation, Josh Winckowski pitched between those two and beat the Brewers with five innings of two-run ball.
The 24-year-old rookie has gone 4–5 in nine starts with the club with an 86 ERA+.
Kansas City Royals
The Royals will hand the ball to Zack Greinke for his 506th career start, which leads all active pitchers.
He also leads all active players in innings pitched and he will surpass 3200 in this start.
The six-time all-star is just 3–6 this season but his 4.41 ERA is respectable, if not quite league average.
His Royals come into Thursday night’s game having lost seven out of nine but they are playing hard for Manager Mike Matheny.
Andrew Benintendi, Carlos Santana, and now Whit Merrifield are all gone by way of trade but that has made room for the exciting young players the Royals had on the farm.
Bobby Witt leads the team with 15 home runs and Salvador Perez has gotten hot to up his total to 14. His OPS is approaching league average.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Boston’s last 7 games
- Boston is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing Kansas City
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Kansas City’s last 5 games at home
- The total has gone OVER in 8 of Kansas City’s last 11 games when playing at home against Boston
Boston Red Sox vs. Kansas City Royals MLB Prediction:
Kansas City could win this game and that makes it a live underdog in the matchup.
The surest way to beat the Royals, which really lack offensive prowess, is with pitching and defense, neither of which Boston has.
The Royals could win this game with speed on the bases and some aggression. Not to mention its bullpen, which can be good at times (certain individuals).
So the Royals may be worth a shot if the price is right.
