The Red Sox beat the Brewers Sunday, 7–2, to avoid a sweep and get back to within one game of a .500 record.
Josh Winckowski went five innings to earn the win, only because Boston finally broke through with five in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.
Garrett Whitlock, Austin Davis, and Jon Schreiber threw the final four innings while keeping the Brewers off the scoreboard to close the victory.
Rafael Devers continued to sit out with an injury that has had him out since July 22. He still leads the American League in hits but the games he has missed and Boston’s losing streak have hit his MVP campaign hard.
Nate Eovaldi will start Monday’s opener in Houston. He had a strong start to the season before missing over a month in June and July.
In his three starts since returning, he’s not been the same guy he was earlier in the season.
Eovaldi has given up three, nine, and four earned runs in those three starts, going a combined 13 innings only.
The strikeouts haven’t been there (eight, compared with four walks) and he’s getting hit a lot more than he’s ever been used to.
But Houston is his home and he always seems to pitch better in Texas.
Houston Astros
When the Astros got a look at Eovaldi back on May 17 at Fenway Park, they had him out of the game in the second inning after pounding out eight hits, including five home runs (all in the second inning).
The Astros have had an unexpected start to the unofficial second half — sweeping the Yankees in two and the Mariners in three before losing three in a row to the lowly Oakland A’s.
They then came back to win three out of four against Seattle over the weekend to open the lead in the AL West back up to a dozen games.
Luis Garcia’s ERA+ this season (102) does not match his mark last season (123) but his peripherals suggest he’s been just as good.
His WHIP is down and he has maintained his average of better than one strikeout per inning. He’s given up slightly more home runs per batter this season, which mainly account for the rise in ERA.
He will become the fourth Astros’ starting pitcher to reach 100 innings pitched on the season in this start, along with Framber Valdez, Justin Verlander, and Jose Urquidy. Christian Javier will be next after Garcia.
With Yordan Álvarez back, the Astros are now only waiting on Michael Brantley from the starting lineup to return to action.
After these three against Boston, they will hit the road for a weekend in Cleveland.
