The Red Sox couldn’t even sweep the Padres. JD Martinez carried them to two victories in the first two games but then Joey Lucchesi and a cohort of San Diego relievers shut the Sox down in a 3–1 victory.

Boston isn’t a bad team but it won 108 games and the World Series just a year ago. This season, it’s squarely a third-place team in the American League East, well ahead of the Blue Jays but still six full games back of Tampa.
Some fans will hold out hope of a run but the Sox have to not only catch Tampa, but either Oakland or Cleveland too. That’s simply too much to ask, especially of a team with a depleted pitching staff.
Eduardo Rodriguez has some personal gains to go after by finishing the season strong. He’s already set a career-high in starts, innings pitched, and strikeouts with a whole month to go.

And he’s up for arbitration this winter.
Colorado Rockies
It’s still a little hard for me to believe that the Rockies are in last-place out West this season. They have even better worse than the Padres and haven’t reached 60 wins yet.
Trevor Story, Nolan Arenado, and Charlie Blackmon have all stayed healthy and produced big years. Jon Gray realized his potential and had a career year. German Marquez is 12–5 as the ace of the staff.
So what went wrong? Just about everything else. The pitching has no depth and the same can be said of the lineup.
The Rockies have a lot of contracts locked into next year, which could be a hard one but after that, the teardown will gain some steam.
