Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox have to finish hot and get tons of help from Baltimore to stay out of last place this year.
They beat the Royals in two out of three at Fenway Park over the weekend.
Xander Bogaerts hit his 38th double of the season in Sunday’s 13–3 drubbing of KC. He enters Tuesday hitting .316, tied with Aaron Judge and just one point behind league leader Luis Arraez of the Twins.
This game is shaping up to be Michael Wacha’s. He followed Brayan Bello in the rotation last week and Bello will start Tuesday’s opener.
Wacha would make Boston the definitive road favorite in this game.
He’s been the Red Sox’ best starting pitcher all season. He has not lost since May 31, coincidentally against Cincinnati.
It’s his only loss all season. He’s 11–1 with a 2.61 ERA in 20 starts (Boston is 15–5 in those games).
Last time out, he didn’t factor in the decision, despite giving up one run in seven against the Royals (Boston eventually won the game, 2–1).
Not only was Wacha’s loss to Cincinnati his only one all season, he didn’t even give up an earned run in the start. One unearned run was all it took in a 2–1 loss.
Cincinnati Reds
Cincinnati has a far worse record than Boston does but it has the upper hand over at least one team in its division.
Pittsburgh is three games behind the Reds going into Tuesday’s games but that isn’t much of a consolation prize for the season Reds fans have had to go through.
Manager David Bell has to be feeling the heat on his seat in his fourth season.
After two years of finishing just slightly above .500 but failing to win even a single playoff game, Cincinnati has bottomed out in 2022.
If the Reds can’t win at least five of their final 15 games, they will lose 100 games for just the second time in the franchise’s history, which dates back to 1882.
Chase Anderson finished 12–4 with a 160 ERA+ in 140 innings for the Brewers in 2017 but he was released twice by the Tigers and once by the Rays this year.
In five games (four starts) for Cincinnati, Anderson is 1–3 with a 6.43 ERA this season.
He’s only given up seven hits in 14 innings but 11 walks have killed him.
He’s been effective in three starts this month, however — 2.2 scoreless against the Rockies, four innings against the Brewers, and five innings for his only win of the season last time out in St. Louis.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
Boston Red Sox vs. Cincinnati Reds MLB Prediction:
Wacha has been one of the easiest starters to back all season.
But Anderson’s recent results have not been nearly as bad as his small sample season statistics suggest.
Keep an eye on the total in the first five innings. The game will be played in a hitter-friendly stadium but two starting pitchers who don’t give up many hits could keep this one under.
Boston is not a collection of the most patient hitters in the league. If Anderson can throw strike one, he may be able to find some success.
