Boston Red Sox
As you look at the whole picture, it still has not been a great year for the Red Sox but they are trending in the right direction. There is certainly a lot more positivity with their team than there has been in some time.
I wouldn’t say the expectations were off the chart for them in 2022 but people did expect them to at least be representative and build off of last season. Boston is looking like the team they are capable of being right about now.
As you can see by their record, they are undoubtedly an up-and-down team. Stringing together a lot of wins in a row has not been very common for them but they have been doing more of that lately and will look to keep that up.
Given the kind of players that are in this lineup, you knew it was only a matter of time before the offense got clicking. They are too good in that area to just be an average offense.
The pitching is not a strength of this team and I do not feel it has to be. I feel that if they get decent production from the starters and pen to go along with excellent offensive production, they will be in good shape. First place in the East is clearly still lofty but being able to catch the Rays and or Blue Jays is certainly reasonable.
I know they did not play them very well at Fenway but I feel this series with Chicago is a good matchup for Boston. I deem them to be the better team and like the direction, they are headed in more than the Chi Sox.
Boston asserted their dominance in the opener of the series en route to a 16-3 beating. They hit Dylan Cease very well and then got into that bullpen. They will look to follow that same recipe for their contest on Wednesday evening.
Nick Pivetta put forth a strong outing in their last win and boy, he sure got enough run support. They will now turn to Rich Hill and it would be nice if they were able to get some length from him.
Chicago White Sox
I do not think it is hyperbole to say that the White Sox have been one of the more disappointing teams in the sport. Given the kind of expectations for them in the pre-season, they have not lived up to them at all.
Despite what the media might try and feed people, what we are seeing with this team is they are not as good as what people feel. The perception out there is they are some loaded team with talent on both sides of the field but that really is not the case.
First off, their rotation is nothing special and it is hard to deny that. Cease? Keuchel? Velasquez? The only guy that is truly trustworthy there is Giolito and calling him an ace is generous. With those arms, the Chi Sox will certainly not make a deep playoff run.
Also, the bullpen has a lot of work to do. They might have some guys that throw hard and have good stuff but the results are certainly not always there. If that part of their game does not improve, you will keep on seeing similar results from them.
As far as their offense goes, it is a good one but not great. There are plenty of batters in that lineup that should not strike a ton of fear into the opposing pitchers and that is certainly an issue for this group.
At the end of the day, this club does have talent but not enough of it. Their .500 start through the first 40+ games is indicative of who they are. Sure, they could improve as the year goes on but I do not expect any crazy turnaround.
It is well documented that Dylan Cease has not always enjoyed his outings against the Red Sox and that was on full display Tuesday. He lasted just 3 innings, allowed 8 hits, and gave up 7 earned runs. The Boston hitters were on him from the first pitch until he departed.
The aforementioned Giolito gets the ball in this one and he has been sharp so far. The righty is 2-1 with an ERA of 2.84. After a total embarrassment in the opener, Chicago really needs him to step up against the Red Sox.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Red Sox are 6-0 in their last 6 games.
- The Red Sox are 5-1 in their last 6 games as a dog.
- The White Sox are 1-4 in their last 5 home games.
- The White Sox are 4-1 in their last 5 games following a loss.
Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago White Sox MLB Prediction:
The Red Sox have been clicking lately and will look to keep that up here. Although they do not have the advantage in terms of starting pitcher, I do feel they can be in this game.
Boston does not need Hill to go out there and be great but he has to be effective while he’s out there. After he leaves, it will likely be Houck and the rest of the pen.
That could go either way but I think it is fair to say Boston will count on their offense here. They have shown the ability to hit Giolito and I feel they can do that here. They might now win but the runs are too much for me to lay with Chicago.
Give me the Red Sox at +1.5 here.
