Neither team blinked on Friday until Baltimore scored the first two runs of the game in the sixth inning.
Those would be the only runs either team scored all evening in a 2–0 win for the road team.
Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles arrived in Houston trailing the Mariners by 2.5 games for the final Wild Card spot after taking two out of three from the White Sox.
Manager Brandon Hyde spoke pregame about the importance of his starting pitcher, Kyle Bradish, going six innings to help out a bullpen that worked a lot of innings versus Chicago.
Bradish gave his manager two better than that — a career-high eight innings of two-hit, shutout baseball.
He got the win thanks to Luis Urias’ home run to break the 0-0 tie in the sixth inning, a majestic fly ball onto the train tracks.
The home run came off of Christian Javier, who was in his first inning of relief in over three months.
Dean Kremer will start game two on Saturday. He was a part of the trade that sent Manny Machado from Baltimore to Los Angeles in July of 2018.
Kremer made his Major League debut in 2019 and started four games.
He got hit hard in 13 starts last season but he got off to a fast start in June this year and has pitched well since then. He’s got a 116 ERA+ in a career-high 14 starts this season.
Houston Astros
Lance McCullers pitched well for the third time in as many starts on Friday. He missed the first four months of the season.
It was his return that sent Javier back to the bullpen, at least temporarily. Houston has indicated that it will use a six-man rotation going forward, as it has in the past.
Friday was the eighth time this season Houston has been shutout. Kyle Tucker and Trey Mancini failed to deliver after the Astros put two of the first three batters on base to start the ninth against the Orioles’ bullpen.
Yordan Alvarez has just one home run in his last 24 games. He went 1-for-3 with a walk on Friday.
Tucker singled in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
Tucker’s was the Astros’ first hit off Bradish, who immediately struck out Mancini to get out of the only jam he faced all night.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Houston Astros MLB Prediction:
This one goes under too.
The two starting pitchers have been consistent all season.
Both bullpens enjoyed some rest on Friday and figure to be the better for it.
Alvarez is going to bust out eventually but until he does, his timing has been a bit off.
Houston has plenty of other bats to lift the lineup but it just isn’t quite as scary without the big bopper in the middle.
