Baltimore Orioles
Once upon a time, Alex Cobb was a budding young starting pitcher. He even came back from major arm surgery to pitch well for his original team, the Tampa Bay Rays.
Then he signed a big deal with Baltimore and lost 15 games in his first season with the O’s in 2018. He was even worse in just three starts last season before missing the rest of the season to recover from hip surgery.
He’s had his fair share of nightmarish experiences at Fenway Park. Don’t be fooled that Baltimore is confident enough to run him out there as its second starter; the Orioles are desperate for innings, even in a 60-game season.
Boston Red Sox
Martin Perez will make his first regular season start with Boston — his third team in three years after playing the first seven seasons of his career with Texas.
He’s been a tad below league-average over his entire career and he was just worse than that last season, his only, in Minnesota.
But a team like the Red Sox affords an arm like Perez to win games against the bad opponents and most likely lose them to the superior sides.
He has done a pretty good job of keeping the ball down and inside the park over his career, even in Texas. His home runs have crept up in the last couple seasons, however.
Keeping the ball in Fenway Park will be the key to Perez’s success. Yet he’s never been much of a strikeout guy and will hardly thrive with Boston’s unspectacular defense behind him.
