Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles hit five home runs in Monday’s 14–8 win in Boston.
Cedric Mullins, who went 30/30 last season but won’t quite replicate that this year, led the game off with his 16th.
Anthony Santander hit two to push his career-high to 31 dingers.
Gunnar Henderson hit his fourth and Austin Hays knocked his 16th.
Jordan Lyles only lasted two innings but Spenser Watkins and Logan Gillaspie combined to get the last 21 outs and spare the Orioles’ bullpen of a taxing night. The run support made it all possible.
Baltimore is barley alive in the American League playoff picture. It’s four back of both Seattle and Tampa Bay in the loss column but it won’t have any more chances to play either team head-to-head.
So the O’s must continue beating Boston and look for a little help.
Kyle Bradish opposes Michael Wacha in a good pitching matchup Tuesday. Wednesday will feature Dean Kremer against Rich Hill.
Kremer’s got a 132 ERA+ in 114 innings this season and he threw the first shutout of his young career the last time out — against Houston, no less.
He needed just 106 pitches to finish the game so there shouldn’t be any concern about him feeling fatigued going into this game.
He faced Boston twice in August and gave up five earned runs in 11 innings.
Boston Red Sox
JD Martinez homered off of Lyles on Monday but it was just his 13th home run on the season.
A strong start will push Martinez over 100 OPS+ for the eighth consecutive full season but he has not produced up to his expectations since the All Star Break.
With free agency impending, Martinez will have to sign a prove-it deal in all likelihood. Will Boston be interested? Martinez certainly brings positives to the clubhouse, even if he is no longer the same offensive player.
Rich Hill may be in his final season before retirement. He’s 42 and as well as he has pitched, he’s not really shutting anyone down lately.
He went five against the Yankees his last time out and pitched around an error but still gave up three earned runs and another unearned.
He’ll have some good innings but it’s too much to expect him to hold this Orioles lineup down for a full five or six innings. They will almost surely get to him for a couple runs in at least one inning.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Red Sox are 0-6 in their last 6 overall.
- Over is 3-0-1 in Orioles last 4 vs. American League East.
- Head to Head: Orioles are 4-9 in the last 13 meetings in Boston.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox MLB Prediction:
Baltimore is the play here. Not only is Kremer pitching well, this offense is going to hit Hill, moderately at worst, big-time at best.
For Boston to be the favorite here is highly suspect. I recommend even laying some runs, if your ‘book offers it.
