The Braves will hit the road to begin a series with the Nationals on Thursday evening.
Atlanta is currently a very big favorite in the opener. I would expect that to remain the same for the entire series.
Kyle Wright will be opposed by Anibal Sanchez in this game.
Atlanta Braves
There is no question that the Braves are a very talented team and they are headed in the right direction. However, they still have some work to do if they want to get to where they got a season ago.
I think there were some folks that were putting them in a category that they were not quite in yet. They could certainly end up being one of the best teams in the NL, but they still have to prove more as the season goes on.
It was well documented that Atlanta played a lot of bad teams in their stretch of great play and there were some that questioned how good they were. What this team really needed was a test and they sure got one in their last series.
The reality of the situation is the Mets walked into their park for three games this week and showed they are the better team. It does not mean the NL East is decided, but they are the cream of the crop in that division and the second-best team in the NL.
The Braves knew this series was going to be a tricky one, but the expectation was they would at least take two of them, but they did not have enough. This series should be a lesson for them on how to be better in the future.
Something that was clear in this series with New York is they just did not have enough offense. Scoring 8 runs in 3 games is not going to get it cut against a team like that. For such a highly-anticipated series, I thought that Atlanta looked pretty flat and they did not appear to be ready.
In the finale on Wednesday, Charlie Morton went 5 innings and allowed 5 earned runs. They were hoping for a more effective outing, but he just did not have it going enough to get it done.
After a tough series like that, they now have a get-right series with the Nationals and this is one they need to take advantage of. When facing a team like this, it is important that they do not let up.
Washington Nationals
Wow, the Nationals continue to be a dreadful team. There comes a time when it is hard to keep thinking of words to describe how bad of a year they have had.
It was understood this season was going to be hard to watch for fans to take and it has been just that. That is what happens when a team like this gets rolled out on the field every day.
They can say they are rebuilding, but it seems more like they are taking steps back. You would at least like to see some hope with this club, but there just is not a lot of it.
As I look at this roster, there is not a lot they do well and that is concerning for this organization. Neither the offense nor the pitching is anything good and until that changes, do not expect the results to be all that different.
Given how competitive the NL is, teams have to have a good amount of front-end talent to truly compete. Besides Juan Soto, they do not have a lot of “it” players, which makes it very hard for them to compete with some of the top dogs.
Sometimes it can be silly to project but I really feel the basement is where Washington is going to belong for a while. Everyone else in the division is improving and is willing to spend some cash, while these guys are stuck where they are. Unless a bunch of prospects all pan out at once, it is hard for me to see the Nats being all that relevant in the future.
Things did not go as they wished in their most recent two-game set with the Mariners, as they dropped both of them. It will not get any easier when they host the defending champs for a tricky four-game series.
Anibal Sanchez will be getting the start on Thursday and this will be his debut in 2022. Hey, he can’t be worse than some of the other guys they have rolled out this season, right?

Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals MLB Prediction:
I think the Braves come into this series angry and as well they should. They laid an egg in their last series, but they do have a chance to do some damage here.
Atlanta is just a much more talented and deeper team and I look for them to put that on display here. It is going to be very hard for the Nationals to keep up and I am not sold on them competing for the whole game.
Kyle Wright has been very impressive this season and he should be able to keep that up on Thursday. I think the strong offense and strong pitching will get it done for the Braves in the opener.
Give me the Braves laying the runs on the road.
