The Braves and Phillies will be squaring off for the second game of their series on Tuesday evening.
Atlanta is laying a short price on the road at the moment with a total of 7.5. I did see that number begin at 7 and get ticked up half a run.
Spencer Strider will be going against Aaron Nola, which ought to make for a pretty good pitcher’s duel.
Atlanta Braves
As they headed into this series, the Braves were looking to do what the Cubs had done to the Phillies in the previous series and do some damage, but that did not happen in the opener on Monday.
It was a game these guys could have won and have won in the past, but were not able to get the job done. I would call it a frustrating loss, but not a type of loss to go crazy over.
One thing that should be upsetting to the Braves here is the fact that they wasted a very impressive start by Max Fried. The lefty went 6 innings while allowing 3 earned runs and punching out 8 batters. He gave his team a shot but had nothing to show for it in the end.
The big thing in this game is the bullpen did not do its job when called upon and specifically A.J. Minter did not do his job. Yes, the pen for Atlanta has been quite good all season long, but that does not excuse the collapse that took place on Monday.
In the 8th inning, Minter allowed 3 earned runs, which turned the game from a 4-3 Braves lead to a 6-4 Phillies lead. I would not necessarily expect him to have a ton of similar experiences, but it is something to keep an eye on.
For as much as the pitching did not do its job when it mattered most, that does not mean the offense was great, either. Sure, they scored 4 runs, but I thought they would have been able to do more against Ranger Suarez and that bullpen.
Although the Mets did not play on Monday, they were able to gain half a game on the Braves with their loss. Coming into this contest, New York holds a two-game lead over Atlanta in what is a tough NL East.
Next up in the rotation is Spencer Strider and this kid has been quite impressive so far. Before the break, he did not have his best stuff against the Nationals, but the numbers did not tell the whole story. With all of that said, he will look to get back on track against a tough divisional foe.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies have truly been a team this season that prior results have not meant a ton in the next game. They can look awful and then look impressive in the next game.
The goal for this group was to come out of the break and really do some damage against what is a very bad Cubs team. They did the opposite of that and got outscored 25-7, which included a 15-2 massacre on Friday.
Although winning the division will likely not happen, the Phils knew the importance of these games with the Braves and they started off the series just how they wanted to. From a fan’s perspective, it has to drive them a little crazy that they were absent against a minor league team and were impressive against a good team, even though it was just the opening game.
For the most part, I liked what I saw from Philadelphia on Monday. I thought they played a complete game and showed they can compete with the defending champs.
These guys were able to get 9 hits off of Fried but only got 3 runs off of him. It is nothing to complain about given the caliber of arm he is, but they would have liked to capitalize more on those hits.
It was a very good sign to see the Phillies have success against Minter, who is not an easy guy to hit around. For a while now, Philadelphia has had to have some “other” guys step up and Bryson Stott did that in the 6-4 victory, as he had 2 hits and 5 RBI.
In terms of the pitching, I thought it was solid. Ranger Suarez delivered a strong start and did not allow an earned run. The bullpen, which has been shaky at times this season, was able to get the job done and seal the victory over a tough offense.
Aaron Nola will get the ball in this game and he will look to keep up what he has done for most of the season. The record of 6-7 is not where he would like it to be, but that mark is not indicative of what he has been. A lot of his other numbers have been impressive and he has shown to be one of the best starters in the NL when he is on.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Braves are 27-9 in their last 36 during game 2 of a series.
- The Braves are 51-18 in their last 69 following a loss.
- The Phillies are 3-7 in their last 10 games.
- The Phillies are 8-22 in their last 30 Tuesday games.
Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies MLB Prediction:
The Braves know they have to get back to their winning ways here. It will not be an easy one, but I do like them to respond here.
Both Nola and Strider have been sharp this season and I could see that keeping up here. Although there was that collapse on Monday, I have more faith in the bullpen for Atlanta here.
I can see this being a close game that the Braves do enough to get the job done.
Give me the Braves as a short favorite.
