The Braves and Mets will be wrapping up their series on Sunday afternoon from Citi Field.
Spencer Strider will be matched up against Jacob deGrom in this tilt.
New York is the favorite in this spot, but it is nothing heavy. The total opened at 7.5 and is now down to 6.5.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves came into this series hoping to really gain some ground on the Mets, but they just have not been able to do so.
Now that they have lost three of the four games in this series, they trail their NL East rival by 5.5 games, and winning the division does not seem all that likely at this point.
It is not to say this group has not played well against New York at times this season, but it has not happened enough. In the head-to-head matchups, it has been quite clear who the better team has been.
In the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, Jake Odorizzi went 4.2 innings while allowing six hits and two earned runs in his debut for Atlanta. He could have been sharper, but it was the bullpen that really did not do its job as they allowed a combined seven hits and five earned runs in just 3.1 innings of work.
In the second game on Saturday, Max Fried tossed six innings and allowed two earned runs while punching out five. Jackson Stephens went two innings and allowed an additional two runs in the 6-2 loss.
So far in these games, Atlanta just has had a hard time playing a complete game and it has really cost them. Even with a victory on Sunday, they would not be able to win the series.
They will get the tall task of facing Jacob deGrom who is a tough matchup no matter how good the opposing offense is. He is never the guy a team wants to see when their backs are against the wall.
Spencer Strider will be getting the ball in the finale and he is coming off a great game against the Phillies on August 2nd where he went 6.2 innings and struck out 13 batters. It will be hard to have similar numbers against the Mets in this spot, but there is no doubt this kid has the ability to keep them in check.
New York Mets
The Mets kept up their strong play on Saturday and it could not be happening at a better time. If you are a fan of this team, it is hard not to like the direction this club is headed in.
While the Braves came into this series with the goal of gaining ground in their division, the Mets came into it hoping to bury their rival and so far, they have been able to do so.
Of course, there is still a lot of baseball to be played, but if the Mets keep on playing well against Atlanta and are able to do the same thing against the rest of the teams they face, it is hard for me to imagine them not winning the NL East.
David Peterson fired 5.1 innings and did not allow an earned run in the 8-5 win in the first game on Saturday. The bullpen made things interesting which is not what they had in mind but were still able to pull it off in the end.
In the second game on Saturday, Max Scherzer kept up his great pitching as he went seven innings, did not allow an earned run, and punched out 11 batters. In his chances against the Braves this season, he has pitched quite well.
One thing that has remained true through the first four games of this series is the Mets getting production on offense. Even in the loss on Friday, they were able to rally back with the bats and made the game closer than it should have been.
With their ace on the hill for Sunday’s game, the Mets will look to give him more run support and figure out a way to get the win. Something that has been frustrating with this team over the years is them often not being able to get victories when deGrom is on the hill.
In his first start of the season, deGrom went six innings and allowed one earned run on six strikeouts, but the Mets still lost the game 5-1. When he was out there, he did not appear to miss a beat which is not all that surprising given the kind of pitcher he is.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Braves are 2-5 in their last 7 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower.
- The Braves are 1-4 in their last 5 road games.
- The Mets are 5-0 in their last 5 after allowing 2 runs or less in their previous game.
- The Mets are 11-2 in their last 13 games on grass.
Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets MLB Prediction:
Some of these games have not exactly been the most competitive but I do not see that being the case in the finale.
Given who the starters are in this one, I feel it will shape out to be a close one in the end, but New York does have a clear advantage here.
There is a very good chance that Strider is sharp, but I expect deGrom to be a little bit better and lead his team to the victory.
My play is the Mets on the Moneyline in this spot.
