MLB Baseball Gambling Total: O/U: 8
The Braves will be in Queens to start a critical series with the Mets on Thursday evening.
Kyle Wright will be opposed by Carlos Carrasco in the first game.
New York is a very small favorite at home in this one. The total has dropped from 8.5 to 8.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves crushed the Phillies by a score of 13-1 in the first game, but the offense went cold for them in the second game and they lost 3-1.
They were really looking to take both from Philadelphia but they ran into a very tough customer in Zack Wheeler and they just did not have a ton of answers for him or their bullpen.
Atlanta was able to scatter six hits around but they did not do a lot with the guys they had on base. It was one of those games where runs were at a premium.
In the loss on Wednesday, Charlie Morton fired 6.2 innings and did not allow an earned run while allowing three hits and striking out eight batters. He did what he had to do out there, but the bullpen just did not perform when they were called upon.
Dylan Lee allowed an earned run in 0.2 innings of work and Collin McHugh allowed two earned runs in the same amount of innings. For a bullpen that has been quite reliable this season, they just did not get it done.
Coming into this big series, the Bravos hold a record of 63-42 and they still trail the Mets by 3.5 games. They have been able to cut into the deficit that was double digits at one point, but it has been hovering right around this number for some time now.
Unless New York really falls off and Atlanta surges again, their best chance to gain ground on the NL East leader is by doing well in the head-to-head contests. If they do not do that, they can forget about winning the division.
Kyle Wright will be starting off the series and this guy has been very impressive this season. Some other arms on this team might get talked about more than him, but I have really liked what I have seen from him as he looks to get win number 14 on the year.
New York Mets
After losing a frustrating 5-1 game to the Nationals on Tuesday, the Mets bounced back and beat their divisional rival 9-5 on Wednesday and they were able to earn the series win.
New York started their scoring in the third inning when Pete Alonso hit a home run to score Francisco Lindor which was just the beginning of the offense for them.
The really big inning for them came in the fifth inning when Daniel Vogelbach crushed a grand slam off of Jordan Weems. That was certainly the biggest swing he has had so far in a Mets uniform.
All in all, this team did exactly what they had to do against one of the worst teams in the sport. For the most part, the Mets have beaten teams they should be beating this season.
Chris Bassitt looked very sharp in the victory as he went seven scoreless innings and struck out four batters on six hits. It was clear from very early on in the game that he had all of his pitches going and his opponent could not solve him.
Things did get a little interesting in the 9th inning when Mychal Givens allowed five hits and five earned runs. That is not the kind of scare the Mets wanted, but it did not cost them in the end.
New York will look to keep up their strong play when they host the Braves starting on Thursday. This is a series where they have a chance to bury the defending champs in the standings.
Getting the ball in the first game is Carlos Carrasco and he is coming off a strong start against the Marlins. There have been some times this season where he has gotten hit well, but the numbers have been solid for the most part.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Braves are 8-2 in their last 10 during game 1 of a series.
- The Braves are 23-7 in their last 30 games when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Mets are 2-5 in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- The Mets are 20-9 in their last 29 home games.
Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets MLB Prediction:
The Braves still trail the Mets, but I still view them as the slightly better team and feel they will show it in the opener.
Both of these starters have been impressive this season, but at this point, I trust Kyle Wright more and I look for him to be a little better than Carrasco here.
I see this as a game that turns out close in the end with Atlanta doing enough to get the job done.
Give me the Braves as a short dog on the road.
