Atlanta Braves
Gone is Atlanta’s 3–1 series lead. The Dodgers beat Max Fried for the first time in 2020 when he is seemingly always at his most vulnerable in the first inning.
Los Angeles hit him with three in the first and held on to win, 3–1, helping us cash our first total play in the series.
Morale should not be too low in the Braves’ clubhouse. They still have one final chance to close out the Dodgers with their other ace, Ian Anderson, set to start.
Anderson started Game 2, which the Braves won, 8–7. He didn’t allow any of the seven runs but kept the Dodgers scoreless through four innings.
The only reason he couldn’t go deeper into the game was because he walked five in uncharacteristic fashion. The Dodgers only mustered one hit and so won’t feel too comfortable in the box in this one.
Between Anderson and the bullpen, which has been fantastic in this series, the Braves are well-aligned with the pitching staff.
The key will be getting a big offensive contribution from one of their stars, namely Ronald Acuna Jr., who has just four hits in the series. He’ll be the first man to the plate on Sunday night.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers, for all their momentum, don’t have a clear option to start Game 7.
Tony Gonsolin opposed Anderson in Game 2 and pitched well until he ran into trouble in the middle innings. He’s certainly an option to appear in this game, whether at the start or later on.
Julio Urias may be the most likely option for Dave Roberts, however. He has had three days of rest since starting Game 3 and pitched extremely well under, albeit, relaxed circumstances after his offense gave him eleven runs of support before he even took the mound.
Then there’s Clayton Kershaw, who has had just two days of rest since starting Game 4 but could certainly take the ball for a short stint, if his team needs him.
Between Urias, Gonsolin, Kershaw and the power arms in the bullpen, the Dodgers should have more than enough innings covered. It’s just a matter of Roberts picking and choosing properly.
