Atlanta Braves
Atlanta played conservatively with its 3–1 lead in Game 5 but got off to a great start anyway.
The Braves had the Dodgers on the ropes early but Marcell Ozuna ran into an out on third base and the Dodgers stole momentum, coming back to win the game, 7–3, and forcing a Game 6.
The Braves will hand the ball to Max Fried on Saturday night with a chance to again go to the World Series. It’s a situation Brian Snitker would have relished before this series started.
But unless his players prove to have short memories tonight, they could start this game with a sour taste in their mouths.
Fried out-dueled Walker Buehler in Game 1 of this series with six innings of one-run ball. The only run he allowed was a solo home run by Kike Hernandez on a hanging breaking ball.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Even with the wind of last night’s comeback victory at their backs, the Dodgers will be challenged to break through against Fried tonight.
But added confidence from guys at the plate like Mookie Betts — who finished Game 5 with two hits in later at-bats — and Corey Seager — who is sizzling hot right now — will give them a chance.
Their greatest hope, however, rests on the right arm of Buehler. He, like Fried, will come into this game on full rest having thrown against the opponent in Game 1.
He wasn’t sharp in that one, however. He walked five in five innings and gave up three hits, including a solo home run. He was fortunate to get through five innings having only given up the one run.
The fact that he did find ways to wriggle out of tough situations should give him confidence in this start. Look for Buehler, who thrives in big games like this one, to attack the zone earlier in the count in an attempt to be more economical with his pitch count.
Buehler has a blister problem, however, and certainly won’t go the distance anyway. It will be interesting to see who Dave Roberts goes with out of the bullpen in a must-win situation.
Julio Urias threw 101 pitches in Game 3, which looks like a mistake now. Remember, the Dodgers jumped out to an 11–0 lead in the first inning of that one.
Roberts certainly could bring Urias back on two days rest but it would be a gamble. He’s more likely to turn to Tony Gonsolin or a combination of shorter relievers, depending how deep Buehler can get. That would potentially free Urias up to start Game 7, if necessary.

That isn’t likely to happen tonight. Look for this one to stay tight and low-scoring all the way through and finish under eight runs with ease.
