The Diamondbacks and Padres will be wrapping up their series on Sunday afternoon.
Merrill Kelly will be opposed by Mike Clevinger in this game.
The total in this one opened at 7 and is now up to 7.5 in most spots I have checked.
Arizona Diamondbacks
For a while now, the Diamondbacks have really gotten back to how they were expected to play and they have not been all that impressive.
In their last 10 games, this team is 2-8 and they do not appear to be figuring things out. It is going to be a much-needed all-star break for them.
Sure, Arizona has been better this season than they have been in past years, but that still is not saying a ton. They are still nowhere near contention and the same goes for them winning the NL West.
Earlier this season, they were not buried in the basement by as many games as people thought, but now it starting to get to that number. Coming into this game, they trail Los Angeles by 21.5 games and that will likely only get bigger as the season goes on.
The bottom line with this team is they still have to add more talent to their roster. They do have some good players, but it is not enough and that will have to change if they want to be more competitive in the future.
The D-Backs are a team that can play well in small samples, but they have a hard time doing it for an extended amount of time. When you look at their team, that should not come as a surprise.
Things have not gone so well in this series with the Padres and they will look to change that in the finale on Sunday. San Diego has beaten them by scores of 5-3 and 4-3 in this series.
Merrill Kelly will be getting the ball in this one and he has been a bright spot for this team. Even if his team is not the most talented, when he takes the mound, oftentimes I feel like Arizona has a shot because he can keep them in it.
San Diego Padres
To me, the Padres are a good team and I have liked what I have seen from them, but I still do not know entirely what to make of them.
When I think of some of the best teams in the NL, I think these guys could get there but are not there quite yet. They still have to show more consistency if they can be put in that category.
Although they have been able to have a good record without their best player, they are going to need him if they want to make some noise in the postseason. Given the kind of talent that he is, I do not feel they can truly expect to get where they want to get without him.
If they are going to be playing when it matters most, it almost certainly is going to come as a wild card team. There was a time when the gap between them and the Dodgers was not that big, but the deficit is now 9.5 games and that is going to be very hard to make up.
In terms of the NL West, it is very clear that LA is still the standard of that division. It is not to say San Diego cannot play well against them at times, but being able to have success against them over the full season is still a very tall order.
The expectation in this series is that they had to really take care of business against Arizona and so far, they have done just that. The offense has not been great in those games, but I have liked what I have seen from the pitchers.
In the victory on Saturday, Sean Manaea went 6 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. He did not have a bunch of strikeouts, but he was able to be effective and give good length.
Mike Clevinger gets the ball on Sunday and he has shown signs of being his old self but is not quite there yet. He comes into this game with a record of 2-2 and an ERA of 3.79.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Diamondbacks are 46-102 in their last 148 games following a loss.
- The Diamondbacks are 9-27 in their last 36 Sunday games.
- The Padres are 2-6 in their last 8 games following a win.
- The Padres are 5-2 in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing record.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
The D-Backs have come up short in both of these games and I feel that will continue here.
I would not say the Friars have been great in this series, but they have followed a similar formula both times. If they can do enough on offense and get strong pitching, then I like their chances once again.
This is a solid pitching matchup and I think it is possible that both guys could be effective. When the game gets into the hand of the bullpens, I just trust the Padres more to get it done.
In a spot like this, I do not love laying the runs with the home team, but I do see them getting the job done. The $1.60 is not out of control for me in this spot.
