Arizona Diamondbacks
There is no question that the Diamondbacks have been one of the more surprising teams in baseball so far. The fact that they are even relevant has a lot of folks shocked.
After seeing the total disaster that they put on display a year ago, a common idea was that they would have similar results in 2022 but that has not been the case.
Realistically, it was hard to expect that they would do anything worth noting in this season. When you looked at who they had on their team compared to others, they did not match up with a lot of clubs.
Clearly, Arizona is not the most talented team out there but they have been able to get contributions from a lot of different guys on this team, which is key for any roster.
There is still a long way for this team to get back to being a threat in the NL but they are at least on a better path than they were and will look to keep building on that.
The Snakes come into this game with a record of 26-29 and are 4th in the NL West. Given how tough that division is, I think a lot of people thought they would be about 20 games behind the Dodgers at this point in the season.
Even though the Diamondbacks did take the first games of the series, they did drop the next two with the Pirates in their last series. Although Pittsburgh is an improved team, that is never a good sign for a team to lose a series to that group.
Zac Gallen looked sharp in the loss on Sunday but the offense went cold and did not score any runs at all. Madison Bumgarner will be on the hill in this one and even though he does not have a great record, he has been pretty effective this season. He certainly will need better run support in this contest.
Cincinnati Reds
The Reds have been one of the worst teams in baseball during the whole season. There are not a lot of other ways to describe that one.
Yes, compared to the historically bad start they got off to this season, they have been a bit better but it has not been anything great. And really, it is not hard to be marginally better than how they began.
I think people around baseball were reasonable about this team and did not expect a ton from them this year but certainly did not predict this kind of play. It has been a bit surprising, to say the least.
The way they have played so far is the way a bottom feeder would play. I get they are not some great squad but they certainly should be playing better than one of the worst teams in baseball.
A key issue for them during the whole season has been the pitching. They simply have not been able to get consistent production on that side of the field and it shows in an awful lot of their games.
Until that part of their game either gets fixed or changed, I have a hard time seeing them get better. You will continue to see them allowing a lot of runs to their opponents.
You know a team is really struggling when they allow the Nationals to come into their home park and take 3 games of 4 from them. That really might have been the lowest point in the season for the Reds and it is only June.
After they held Washington to just a run in the opener of the series, they allowed them to score a combined 23 runs in the next 3 games. Those kinds of numbers are the ones that should make the manager go crazy.

The D’Backs clearly did not play their best ball against the Pirates over the weekend but this series is a good one for them to get back on track.
I have very little confidence in the Reds right now and I do trust Arizona. They have the advantage in terms of the starter and they just have the better overall team.
Despite a lot of the hype surrounding him, Hunter Greene has not been impressive this season and I am not sold on him changing that here. On the flip side, Bumgarner has been solid and he can certainly keep this lineup in check.
Give me the Diamondbacks as a sight dog on the road.
