AL East Predictions & Handicapping Insight
The AL East was one of the most competitive divisons last year with the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees both having good seasons last year.
This year the same type of race is predicted, and it very well could go down to the final weekend. Look for the the Blue Jays Yankees and the Red Sox all be competitive this year.
Boston Red Sox AL East Predictions
Red Sox AL East Division Odds: +150
Red Sox Win Total Odds: 91.5
The Boston Red Sox come into this season of back to back AL East championships, but this year is going to be even tougher if they want to 3-peat.
The Red Sox pitching staff is led by Chris Sale and David Price, but guys who have been dynamic. The big question with price is if he will wear down like he has the last couple of years as the season has gone on.
For the offense they got their guy JD Martinez who might not hit as many homers this year because of the Green Monster but you can bet he will be hitting all kinds of shots off the wall.
One thing the offense lacked last year without David Ortiz was power, but with Martinez in the linup, that shouldn’t be any sort of problem this year.
New York Yankees AL East Predictions
Orioles AL East Division Odds: -150
Orioles Win Total Odds: 94.5
The Yankees were figured to be a year ahead of schedule last year with the likes of Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez bursting on the scene.
The Red Sox got Martinez, but the Yankees got their man too. Giancarlo Stanton was traded over from the Marlins and he should be able to take advantage of the short porch in right field.
If you are person that likes the long ball, this is the team you are going to want to tune into.
There is really no question if this is a playoff team, they are. The biggquest question is if they will get the Wild Card or if they will be able to pass the Red Sox and win the divison.
Tampa Bay Rays AL East Predictions
Orioles AL East Division Odds: +3300
Orioles Win Total Odds: 77.5
While the Red Sox and Yankees got better, the Tampa Bay Rays have decided to go through a full blown rebuild and it’s probably going to be an ugly season for the 10,000 fans a game that go and watch them.
This offseason the Rays got rid of Alex Cobb, Evan Longoria, Corey Dickerson,Steven Souza Jr, Brad Boxberger packing, Jake Odorizzi.
With all those guys gone it’s going to open up a ton of playing time for the younger guys. The Rays have a really good farm system, one of the best in baseball, but most of the guys are still a year or two away from probably actually being affective in the MLB.
For this year though the fans are going to probably have to suffer through a long summer of some terrible baseball.
Toronto Blue Jays AL East Predictions
Orioles AL East Division Odds: +900
Orioles Win Total Odds: 73
Last year it seemed lie the Toronto Blue Jays had a really good chance to make a run at the World Series but they couldn’t ever get any traction and it didn’t work out.
This year they have mostly the same lineup back and they are hoping for different results. They didn’t get any younger that’s for sure and Curtis Granderson is expected to be a starter for this team
If the batters can stay healthy they should have a good chance to make get one of those wildcard spots, but that’s a big if with the age of their guys.
For the pitching staff on paper they look like they should be much improved off last year, especially if Jaime Garcia can give them solid starts out of the fifth spot.
This team has a lot of what if’s but if the what if’s work out they have a good shot to be a contender in the AL East.
Baltimore Orioles AL East Predictions
Orioles AL East Division Odds: +5000
Orioles Win Total Odds: 73
The Baltimore Orioles still have a lot of their big name guys around, but after that, there isn’t much to get excited about with this team.
One of the biggest offseason moves this year was putting Manny Machado back at his favorite position, shortstop, which might be just a move to give him more value when they try to trade him again at the trade deadline.
The offense should be okay this year, although there will be probably be a lot of strikeouts going around.
The Orioles pitching staff is where the problems are. They made a big pickup getting Andrew Cashner this offseason who was medicore at best last year with the Texas Rangers last year.
If the Orioles want any chance to compete they are going to need to have some of the back of rotation guys step up.
