2025 Lecomte Stakes Handicapping
The race to grab a spot in the 2025 Kentucky Derby is well underway, and from now until the first Saturday in May there’s a qualifying points race almost every weekend.
The focus this Saturday is on Fair Grounds in New Orleans, the host of the (G3) Lecomte Stakes. The Lecomte will award Derby qualifying points to the top five finishers on a 20-10-6-4-2 scale.
The race has drawn a full field of 14 expected starters, going 1 1/16 miles on the Fair Grounds dirt course. There’s no overwhelming favourite in the morning line odds, and the race offers some excellent betting value.

2025 Lecomte Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Built Race Odds: 3-1
Already a winner at both the track and distance, Built accomplished both while winning the Gun Runner stakes last out, considered the local prep for this race. In that one he took the field wire-to-wire and won by an easy 6 3/4 lengths.
Prior to that he broke his maiden at second asking over a runner that came back to win his next start. He’s improved his speed figures in each of his three starts, and here he’ll have to contend with several other front-running speed types.
2025 Lecomte Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Disco Time Race Odds: 9-2
Unbeaten in two career starts, Disco Time didn’t make his racing debut until this past November, but he made the most of it after pressing the pace and then clearing the field in the stretch for a 3 3/4 length win.
He backed up that effort next time out where he led almost from the start and carved out quick fractions before going on to win by 3 1/2 lengths in a race run at one mile in the dirt. This will be his first start since that one on November 30.
Admiral Dennis Race Odds: 8-1
Favoured in all three of his lifetime starts, Admiral Dennis has only won one of those, but he has had to deal with some tough racing luck.
He broke poorly from the gate first out and then had to check in traffic in the stretch before getting up to run third, beaten two lengths. Last out in the Gun Runner he again stumbled leaving the gate and had to be rushed up into contention while racing wide and faded badly. Between those two he broke his maiden with a 3 1/2 length win. The third-place runner in that one came back to win next out.
Maximum Promise Race Odds: 10-1
Maximum Promise started his career in a one-mile turf race where he tried coming from second last and was closing well on the leaders but ran out of track to finish fifth, beaten by just over four lengths.
Next out he moved to the dirt and used completely different tactics, going to the front right out of the gate and leading every step to win by an eye-catching 14 lengths. A repeat of that effort makes him a solid contender here at a price, with the concern being this will be his first start in five months.

On paper this shapes up to be an excellent race. Ten of the 14 entries are coming into this off a win, and there’s a good mix of pacesetters and horses that like to come from a bit further back.
The Gun Runner win gives Built the edge in the odds, but I’m going to look elsewhere and play Disco Time for the win. While he essentially took the field wire-to-wire last out, his maiden victory indicates he can also sit off the pace, and with the speed entered here he could get the perfect set up to get the jump on the leaders as they come down the lane.
It all comes down to getting away from the gate cleanly for Admiral Dennis, and if he does that I think he could be dangerous at a price, so I’ll use him in the exacta.
