2024 Peter Pan Stakes Handicapping
Open to three-year-old horses and run at a distance of 1 1/8 miles, the (G3) Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park has typically been used as the principle prep race for the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes in June.
Things are in a bit of flux this year as Belmont continues to undergo extensive renovations, meaning that once again the Belmont race meet has been moved to Aqueduct and branded ‘Belmont at the Big A’. At the same time, the 2024 Belmont Stakes will be run at Saratoga Race Course, and due to track configuration will be run at 1 1/4 miles.
That bit of housekeeping out of the way, the Peter Pan was shaping up to be a very competitive event with three entries in the eight-horse field having just fallen short of making the Kentucky Derby starting gate.
This week one of those in the form of morning line favourite Tuscan Gold was scratched out of the race and will run in the Preakness next weekend instead. Another scratch has reduced the field to six.

2024 Peter Pan Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: The Wine Steward Race Odds: 5-2
Never worse than second in five lifetime starts, The Wine Steward broke his maiden at first asking last spring at Belmont Park and then took his act on the road to capture two consecutive stakes races at Ellis Park and Saratoga.
He closed out 2023 by stepping up to the graded-stakes ranks to run a close up second in the (G1) Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, finishing ahead of two that would eventually make the Kentucky Derby gate.
After six months away from racing he then ran a close up second again in the (G3) Lexington Stakes. Had he won the Lexington, he would have made it into the Derby.
2024 Peter Pan Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Deterministic Race Odds: 5-1
Another first-out maiden winner last summer at Saratoga, Deterministic looked well on his way to the Derby after a next-out win in the (G3) Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct.
But he followed that up with a poor effort in the (G1) Wood Memorial and finished 8th, leaving his connections scratching their heads as to what went wrong, a leaving him outside the Derby field looking in.
Protective Race Odds: 8-1
A 38-1 long shot in the Wood, Protective was bumped hard after the break and had to be steadied, leaving him 11th of 12 in the early part of the race.
From there he was able to work his way steadily through the field and was able to close into a fairly slow pace, getting up for third at the wire. He is still looking for his first lifetime win after three previous starts.
Unique Insight Race Odds: 8-1
After three lacklustre efforts his two-year-old season, Unique Insight has come alive at age three and has won two in a row this year. Both of those have come at Aqueduct and both at this 1 1/8 miles distance. It’s also noted that those wins have come over tracks rated as sloppy and fast.
He’ll add speed to the mix in this his first try at the stakes-level racing.

It’s unfortunate the field here has been reduced to six as it will greatly reduce the betting value on the contenders that are left.
On back class and speed figures, The Wine Steward is the one to beat and he’s my pick, although I’m afraid I won’t be getting anything like 5-2 on him.
That being the case I’ll try to get a better return in the exacta, and use Unique Insight underneath.
