2024 Haskell Stakes Handicapping
One of the key races in the season for three-year-old horses following the spring Triple Crown series, the (G1) Haskell Stakes is run at 1 1/8 miles on the Monmouth Park dirt track.
In addition to the lion’s share of the $1 million purse, the winner of the Haskell earns an automatic entry to the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic, to be held November 2 at Del Mar Racecourse.
The 2024 Haskell has drawn a compact but competitive field of eight starters that includes both the (G1) Belmont Stakes winner and runner-up and a couple others with Grade 1 victories on their resume.

2024 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mindframe Race Odds: 9-5
The lightly raced Mindframe will be making just his fourth career start and comes in off a second-place finish in the Belmont.
After tracking just off the leaders there, he actually got his head in front in deep stretch and looked like the winner, but drifted out with 1/8th of a mile to go, which allowed Dornoch to retake the lead and get the win.
He easily won his first two starts by a combined 21 lengths.
2024 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Dornoch Race Odds: 5-2
The winner of the Belmont, the front-running Dornoch deserves credit for battling back in deep stretch when briefly passed by Mindframe and holding on to defeat that rival by a half-length at the wire.
He was a huge 17-1 overlay in the Belmont coming off two previous races where he was not able to get to the front and control the pace, including the (G1) Kentucky Derby where he had no chance out of the #1 post position and ultimately finished 10th.
He’s in the #1 post here again, but has a much smaller field to deal with, and gets an important cut back in distance form the 1 1/4 mile Belmont.
Fierceness Race Odds: 5-2
The enigmatic Fierceness can look like a world champion one race and an also-ran the next, as evidenced by his pattern of win-lose, win-lose throughout his six lifetime starts.
If the pattern holds he should be the winner here, but the pace set up for the race may work against him. He may not be fast enough early to get to the lead against some of the others in here, and he’s had trouble passing horses when he’s not the one out front controlling the pace.
Tuscan Sky Race Odds: 9-2
Tuscan Sky has done little wrong in his four races so far, winning three of them, and comes into the Haskell with a stakes win over a horse that has since come back to win a Grade 3 level stake, albeit in a field with only four entries.
He also has good early speed and will likely be one of them to contest the pace up front. Distance may be a concern, as he was well beaten in his only try going 1 1/8 miles. It’s also notable that two of his three wins came on off tracks and Monmouth on Saturday is expected to be dry and fast.

The first half-mile of this race will likely be critical, depending on how many of these want to go forward and how fast the early pace might be. You can expect Dornoch and long shot Just Step On It will be up there, with Tuscan Sky, Fierceness and Mindframe all sitting close.
I’m going to bet the pace won’t get crazy, and Dornoch will be able to cruise through comfortable fractions, much as he did in the Belmont. If he’s on the lead as they turn into the stretch he’ll be tough to pass, and although Mindframe did get by him in the last race, I think the shorter distance here will benefit.
I’ll bet on a Belmont repeat, with Dornoch to win and Mindframe to run second.
