2024 Fort Lauderdale Stakes Handicapping

The Gulfstream Park winter race meet is in full swing, and Saturday offers up an excellent afternoon of racing with five stakes races on the card. Three of those are graded stakes, including the (G2) Fort Lauderdale.

Open to horses age three and older, the Fort Lauderdale is run at 1 1/8 miles on the Gulfstream turf course. The race has drawn a strong field, with only one of the nine lacking previous stakes racing experience. There’s no clear-cut favourite and lots of betting value to be had.

2024 Fort Lauderdale Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Win For The Money Race Odds: 5-2

A winner of the (G1) Woodbine Mile in September, that effort earned Win For The Money a spot in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Mile, but he was outrun there and never really factored in the race, finishing seventh.

Prior to that he had been in the money in five-or-six, including an easy stakes win going 1 1/16 miles on the Gulfstream grass. He’s gone longer and shorter, but this will be his first run at this distance.

2024 Fort Lauderdale Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Grand Sonata Race Odds: 3-1

Another one last seen competing in the Breeders’ Cup, Grand Sonata was a contender in the 1 1/2 miles BC Turf, where he was a well-beaten 11th in the field of 13.

Prior to that he was a winner at Kentucky Downs in the (G2) Turf Cup. That was also at 1 1/2 miles, a distance he’s tried three times in a row, so now gets the cutback. He was fourth in this race last year, but was only beaten 3/4 of a length in a blanket finish.

Cash Equity Race Odds: 9-2

French-bred Cash Equity has been busy since arriving stateside (via Barbados) back in June, starting seven times at four different tracks since then.

He didn’t get a win in any of those, but was second or third five times. His last three have been at the graded-stakes level, and he has one win in seven tries at this 1 1/8 miles distance.

Major Dude Race Odds: 5-1

Major Dude comes in off a win in an allowance level event at Keenland, his second win in four starts this year. He’s been off since that Keeneland win back in early October, but has put in some solid works training up to this, including a pair of bullet workouts going four furlongs.

In a race without a lot of early speed, he should be one that is on or pressing the pace from the get-go.

As mentioned, there’s not much early speed signed in here, and it will be interestig to see who wants to take the initiative coming out of the gate. On paper it looks likely that long shot Saratoga Flash will be the one setting the early fractions, while among the contenders both Win For The Money and Major Dude have shown some ability to be close up early.

However, I think there is a distance question with both of those, and I’m going to look at the one taking the cut back in the form of Grand Sonata. The waters were probably just a little too deep for him in the BC Turf, and here he gets significant class relief.

He just missed last year in this race, this year I think he gets the job done.
