2024 Diana Stakes Handicapping

They’re off and running at the 2024 Saratoga summer race meet, which over the next eight weeks will feature a total of 71 stakes races. The first Saturday card of the meet offers three of those, including the Diana, the first Grade 1 event at Saratoga this summer.

Open to fillies and mares age three and older, the 2024 Diana has drawn an excellent field of 10 (plus one main-track only entry), and they’ll go 1 1/8 miles on the turf course.

With a very competitive field and no clear favourite, the race offers bettors lots of good value.

2024 Diana Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Didia Race Odds: 7-2

The super versatile Didia comes into this off a win in the (G1) New York Stakes at 1 3/16 miles and now gets a cut back to a distance at which she’s 2-for-2 in her 11 win career. Notably, the third-place finisher in that race came back to win her next start.

She’s won seven of 10 starts in North America since shipping up from her native Argentina, and has only been out of the money once in that stretch when she was tenth in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf last November. That was only the third time she’s failed to hit the board in 17 career races.

2024 Diana Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Whitebeam Race Odds: 4-1

The UK-bred Whitebeam is the defending race champ, after stalking the pace throughout, duelling through the stretch and then getting up to win by a nose in last year’s race.

Last out in the (G1) Just A Game stakes she again pressed the pace and was able to take over in the stretch but was passed late and finished a half-length back of Chili Flag and a head in front of Mission of Joy, both of whom she’ll be facing here again.

Chili Flag Race Odds: 9-2

Coming into the race off of three straight wins, Chili Flag is similar to Didia in that she’s made 10 starts since coming over from her native France, and only failed to hit the board once in that stretch. Overall in North America she has five wins, three seconds and a third on US turf.

She also has one win and one runner up finish in two starts at Saratoga.

Moira Race Odds: 5-1

The 2022 Canadian Horse of Year after winning the Woodbine Oaks and then beating the boys in the Queen’s Plate that year, Moira was last seen finishing a very good third in the BC Filly and Mare Turf.

While her biggest wins have come on the all-weather surface at Woodbine, she does have win, a second and a third on soft turf, and it’s expected there will be moisture in the ground at Saratoga on Saturday. She’s also 2-for-2 at the 1 1/8 mile distance.

This is an interesting race from a pace perspective, in that there’s very little early speed and all the top contender except for one are mid-pack to deep closers.

It’s entirely likely that 20-1 long shot Evvie Jets will go to the front, with Whitebeam tracking up close before taking over in the stretch and attempting to hold off the late cavalry charge coming behind her. As much as I’m a fan of Didia, the expected soft ground does her no favours, while it probably helps both Whitebeam and Chili Flag.

I’ll take Whitebeam to defend her title and use Didia on the bottom of the exacta.

Note that if rain forces the race off the turf and onto the dirt track, the field will include Venti Valentine who would be the 2-1 ML favourite.
