2024 Cigar Mile Stakes Handicapping

The 2024 edition of the (G2) Cigar Mile has brought together a very solid field of 10 runners (with one scratch) to race the flat mile on the Aqueduct dirt course.

The race is open to horses age three and older, and the field includes a number of previous graded-stakes winners. It’s a tough handicapping race, and with the morning line favourite a tepid 3-1, there’s value to be found in a couple of different betting options.

2024 Cigar Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mullikin Race Odds: 3-1

After winning just once in five tries last year, Mullikin took a big step forward in his four-year-old season, reeling off four consecutive wins over the summer. Including in those was a win in the (G1) Forego Stakes at Saratoga.

Lat out he was a close-up third in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Here he stretches out to a mile for the first time in his career, the same task facing several of the top contenders here.

2024 Cigar Mile Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Post Time Race Odds: 7-2

The ultra-consistent Post Time has 14 starts under his saddle, and has hit the board in every single one, with nine victories to his record.

Back in April he won the (G2) Carter going 7 furlongs on the Aqueduct dirt, but he is one in the filed with a pair of wins at this mile distance. He was last seen running second in the (G1) Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar in early November.

Book’em Danno Race Odds: 4-1

A $5,000 foal that has put more than $1 million in the bank for his connections, Book’em Danno has done most of his winning in the lower level stakes, although he did capture the (G1) Woody Stephens at Saratoga in June.

He typically does his best running when closing late, so will be looking for some early speed to chase here. He’s been the runner-up twice when racing one mile.

Locked Race Odds: 9-2

Locked ran a decent third in the 2023 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, but then missed almost this entire season, only retuning the races this past October after 11 months away.

He made short work of an allowance-level field on his return, winning by more than seven lengths racing 7 furlongs on this track. He’s 1-for-1 in his short career at a mile.

Pace is going to make the race here, with several of those with the best chance wanting to come from out of the pack with a late run.

Of the contenders, Mullikin has perhaps the best early speed, and if he gets away with soft early fractions in the one-turn mile he might be tough to run down.

I’m going to hope that he’ll have some company pressing him up front, opening the door for Locked to run him down late, with Post Time getting up to grab the bottom half of the exacta.
