2024 Juvenile Turf Handicapping

Closing out opening day of the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships is the Juvenile Turf, open to runners age two and over a distance of 1 mile on the Del Mar turf track.

Since being added to the Breeders’ Cup lineup in 2007, the Juvenile Turf has been dominated by horses bred and/or based Europe with the invaders winning 12 of 17 races including the past there years on a row.

The trainer and jockey combination of Aiden O’Brien and Ryan Moore have been particularly successful in the race, teaming up to win six times.

2024 Juvenile Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: New Century Race Odds: 5-2

A winner of three of his last four with one runner-up finish as well, UK bred New Century shipped over to North America early for his final prep and was very impressive winning the (G1) Summer Stakes at Woodbine. Both of his most recent wins have come at this distance.

The track at Woodbine was listed as firm, and all of his overseas success has been on tracks listed as good-fast, so he’s one Euro that should like the firm conditions at Del Mar.

2024 Juvenile Turf Free Pick & Handicapping: Al Qudra  Race Odds: 4-1

Taking the same path as New Century, Al Qudra also shipped to Woodbine in Toronto and ran second to that one as the favourite in the Summer Stakes.

Prior to that he had beaten New Century by more than 2 lengths going 7 furlongs at Ascot. He also has a stakes win on the artificial surface and so firm footing should also prove to his liking.

Zulu Kingdom Race Odds: 8-1

Irish-bred colt Zulu Kingdom started his career in France, but his last two have been in the US and he’s unbeaten in all three.

He has won over soft, firm and yielding tracks and has a pair of narrow graded-stakes wins, taking the (G3) With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga and the (G2) Pilgrim Stakes at Aqueduct. Both of those came at 1 1/16th miles, so he’ll be shortening up a bit here.

Henri Matisse Race Odds: 6-1

After winning three straight in Ireland to launch his career – including a pair at the Group 2 level – Henri Matisse stepped up to Group 1 company for his last two and was close in both, albeit finishing second by 3/4 of a length in the first and most recently 5th by 2 3/4 lengths.

It’s probably not going too far out on a limb to suggest the overseas invaders hold a strong hand here, and that’s without even mentioning serious contenders such as Group 1-placed Seagulls Eleven and Group 2 winner Aomori City.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see any combination of these and/or the three listed above sweep the top three spots, and it’s probably the toughest race to handicap on the Friday Breeders’ Cup card.

Although the favourite won last year, it’s not typically a race that has historically gone to the favourite and despite the result in the Summer Stakes, I think Al Qudra has been generally facing tougher than the top-rated rival.

I’ll take him for the win and hope to get the ML odds.
