2023 Shoemaker Mile Handicapping
One of three Grade 1 races on the Monday card at Santa Anita, the Shoemaker Mile is named for the late Hall of Fame jockey Willie Shoemaker.
As the name implies, the race is run at a flat mile on the Santa Anita turf course. The 2023 edition has drawn a full field of 11 entries and offers great betting value. They’ll be racing not only for a share of the half-million dollar purse, but the winner will gain automatic entry into the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Mile.

2023 Shoemaker Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Hong Kong Harry Race Odds: 7-2
The lukewarm pre-race favourite, Hong Kong Harry is an Irish-bred that has been racing primarily in California for the past year.
In seven starts at Santa Anita and Del Mar he has five wins and second-place finish to his credit. Last out he shipped to Churchill Downs, where he overcame a slow start to get up for the place money in the 1 1/8 mile Turf Classic Stakes.
He’s been very consistent speed wise, hitting a triple digit Equibase speed figure in seven consecutive races.
Trainer Philip D’Amato won the race last year, jockey Flavien Prat won it in 2018.
2023 Shoemaker Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Gold Phoenix Race Odds: 4-1
Breaking form just inside Hong Kong Harry from the #1 post is another Irish bred in Gold Phoenix. In his case, he’s run all but 1 of his 12 races in North America. With the exception of the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland, all of his races have been in southern California.
Two back he captured the (G1) Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita, but last out he could do no better than fourth in the (G2) Charles Whittingham Stakes. That was run at 1 1/4 miles, so he gets a cut back here to what is probably a preferred distance.
He’s the second Phil D’Amato entry in the field. Regular rider Kazushi Kimura comes down from Woodbine to ride.
Exhaulted Race Odds: 5-1
A perfect three-for-three so far this year, Exhaulted got a big breakthrough win last out when he took the (G3) American Stakes at the track and distance just about two months ago.
That was his first graded-stakes ins in four tries and his fourth win overall, running his record to four wins, three seconds and four thirds in 14 lifetime starts.
He’s trained by Peter Eurton and Juan Hernandez gets the mount.
Salesman Race Odds: 8-1
A bit of a wild card in the field, Salesman is an Irish bred that has spent his entire 22 race career in France, where he has hit the board 13 times in 22 starts.
Despite the fact he’ll be making his North American debut, he has in fact been training at Santa Anita since early April and he’s looked very good on the track, recording four consecutive six-furlong bullet woks.
The trainer is three-time race winner Richard Mandella. Jockey Ramon Vazquez gets the mount.

Six of the 11 expected starters in this race are listed at 8-1 or less in the morning line odds, and as that would indicate it’s a very wide-open field and a case could be made for several.
I think Hong Kong Harry is formidable in here, but I like the fact Gold Phoenix will be cutting back in distance, while his main rival might want a bit more distance to get into his very best stride. With that in mind I’ll play Gold Phoenix for the win, and wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being a D’Amato exacta.
