2023 Haskell Stakes Handicapping
Many of the top three-year-old colts in the US gather on the Jersey shore Saturday for the running of the (G1) Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park. They’ll be going 1 1/8 miles on the Haskell dirt course.
In addition to the prize money, the winner of the Haskell will receive an automatic entry into the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic to be run at Santa Anita in November.
The race has drawn a very good and competitive field that includes the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner and the third-place finisher in the 2023 Belmont Stakes.
Odds listed here are provided by the Monmouth Park track oddsmaker.
2023 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Arabian Knight Race Odds: 5-2
The highly regarded Arabian Knight only made one start in his two-year-old season and one more as a three year old, but he won both of those in wire-to-wire fashion by a combined 13 lengths.
The concern would be that the second of those races came way back in January in the (G3) Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn, which means he’ll be coming into this off a six-month layoff, as well as stepping up to face a much stronger group of runners than in either of his two previous races.
He’ll also have to stretch-out an extra 1/16th of a mile, but having said that he has been putting in a series of long workouts in preparation.
Trainer Bob Baffert has won the Haskell a record nine times, most recently in 2020. Jockey John Velazquez has two previous wins.
2023 Haskell Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Mage Race Odds: 3-1
Co-second choice the morning line odds, Mage was last seen running third in the 2023 Preakness Stakes, just two weeks after winning the 2023 Kentucky Derby with a strong move around the final turn and a powerful run through the home stretch.
Prior to those two efforts he ran a very good second to 2022 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Forte in the (G1) Florida Derby. He’s been given some time off since the Preakness in mid-May and similar to Arabian Knight he has been putting in some longer-than-normal works to get ready.
The trainer is Gustavo Delgado, while the red-hot Javier Castellano will been the irons.
Tapit Trice Race Odds: 3-1
The third-place finisher in the Belmont Stakes, Tapit Trice looks to get back to the form that saw him win four straight races earlier in his career, including the (G1) Blue Grass Stakes back in April.
It was off that victory that he went into the Kentucky Derby where he was bet down to co-favourite status by the time the gates opened at Churchill. A bit of a slow start in the large field probably cost him there and he ultimately finished seventh.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has won the Haskell three times, although the last of those was 10 years ago. Jockey Luis Saez was the winning rider in 2019.
Salute The Stars Race Odds: 8-1
After starting his career with second-then-first place finishes in two races on the turf, Salute The Stars had a trainer switch and ran his last two on the dirt, winning them both.
The last of those came over the Monmouth Park track where he won the Pegasus Stakes, defeating (G2) Louisiana Derby winner Kingsbarns. It’s notable that he has made a significant increase in his Equibase speed figure in each of his four successive starts.
Trainer Brad Cox will be looking for his third straight Haskell win. Jockey Joel Rosario looks for his first.
Here’s My 2023 Haskell Stakes Free Pick.
This is a very good field that should make for an excellent race on Saturday afternoon. Most of the top contenders have a previous race to their name that could win this, and there are pros and cons to them all.
On class, Mage would be the pick of the field, having recently run three very good races against top-notch competition. But he’s a horse that likes to come from mid-pack or further and make one strong move, and I don’t know that the Monmouth track configuration – tight turns – suits his style.
Arabian Knight is likely the overall fastest and would probably be my pick, except for the fact of the long layoff. This is a difficult spot for his first race back and I can see trainer Baffert taking the view that it’s a prep for next month’s (G1) Travers Stakes at Saratoga.
Given all that, I’m going to take a shot with Salute The Stars to win. He may be a bit outclassed here, but I like the way he’s consistently moving forward as he makes his third start of his form cycle, and I like the fact he has that last-out win over the track.
