2023 Breeders’ Cup Mile Handicapping
The fourth of nine races on the 2023 Breeders’ Cup World Championships Saturday, the (G1) BC Mile is open to horses age three and older and is run at the flat mile distance on the Santa Anita turf course.
Betting Angles: In the past 30 years, only one horse has won the Mile going wire-to-wire, so pay attention to closers. Fourteen of the past 16 winners had Grade 1 or Group 1 (Europe) wins on their resume. While the race often includes sprinter-types that are stretching out and longer-distance runners cutting back, horses that have had success at the exact one-mile distance have historically fared the best.
Odds listed here are provided by the Santa Anita track oddsmaker.
2023 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Songline Race Odds: 5-2
One of two shipping into the race from Japan, Songline is a multiple Grade 1 winner on her home soil, with five of her seven lifetime wins coming at the one mile distance.
In winning those races, she has run some incredibly fast times, three times hitting the wire in under 1:33, including two back when she won in an almost unbelievable 1:31.40. For comparison, no other horse in the race has managed to get under 1:33 in their career. If those times translate to Santa Anita’s turf, she wins by open lengths.
2023 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Master Of The Seas Race Odds: 7-2
Irish-bred Master Of The Seas has done most of his racing across the pond, but came to North American in late summer and has made two starts, winning the (G1) Woodbine Mile and then losing by just a nose in the (G1) Turf Mile at Keeneland after an inside-outside stretch run.
The Santa Anita firm footing might be an issue, as six of his seven wins have been on tracks rated only good or soft, although his last out runner-up effort at Keeneland was over a turf course rated firm.
Kelina Race Odds: 6-1
Irish-bred filly Kelina has done all of her racing in France, where last out she took on older company, including males, and came away with a win in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp at odds of 20-1.
That race was at 7 furlongs over soft going, but most of her races have been at one mile, and she does have a Group 2 win at the distance and over firm ground.
Exaulted Race Odds: 20-1
The local hope, Exaulted is 4-for-4 on the Santa Anita turf, and has been a different horse this year since switching from racing from dirt to turf surfaces.
Starting in January, he reeled off four consecutive wins going one mile on the Santa Anita grass, gradually moving up in class until eventually winning the (G1) Shoemaker Mile. Last out he ran into traffic trouble in the stretch and had to settle for second place the (G2) Del Mar Mile.
Here’s My 2023 Breeders’ Cup Mile Free Pick.
My favourite type of horse race may be this one, a flat mile on the turf, and so it’s a bit frustrating to admit I’m at something of a loss to know what’s going to happen here. Simply because I just don’t know enough about Japan racing to know what to do with Songline.
As mentioned earlier, her times seem almost unbelievable, and it’s hard to know if that’s a function of the surfaces they race on in Japan – it could be that over there, “firm turf” means “rock hard” – and maybe that accounts for it. Looking at other Japan races, ALL the times seem exceptionally fast. And then consider that in 39 races since 1984, the record winning time for the BC Mile is 1:31.71, a time that she beat two starts back. If she runs like that, she wins.
But at low odds, I can’t count on it. So I’m throwing up my hands and taking Exaulted across the board at big odds, and leaving the Racing Gods to sort it out.
